Unbeatable Amenities and Value at Charlestown

When Bill Miller and Janet Neer decided it was time to sell their town house in the Roland Park neighborhood of Baltimore, Md., it didn't take long for them to find their next home.

Charlestown, the Erickson Senior Living community in Catonsville, Md., boasts spacious apartment homes with access to appealing amenities like a fitness center, salon, medical center, and seven on-site restaurants

Everything added up to an incredible value that Bill and Janet couldn't pass up.

"We were drawn to the community for a number of reasons," explains Bill. "Moving to Charlestown was a wise choice for us financially. Compared to our town house, the monthly cost is about the same, but here, we have so many activities to choose from!"

Predictable costs

Charlestown's pricing structure is made up of two attractive components: a 90% refundable entrance fee* and a monthly service package.

The 90% refundable entrance fee, which is used to secure your desired apartment home, goes back to you or your beneficiaries, if or when you leave the community. The monthly service package bundles all expenses--utilities and maintenance, a meal plan at the community's restaurants, and access to amenities--into one predictable cost, making it easier for residents to maintain their budget.

"We only write one check each month, which has been really nice," says Bill. "In our town house, we were juggling so many bills on top of the mortgage and HOA fees."

"Contrary to what many people think, it's not free to live in a house once the mortgage is paid off," explains Sales Director Matt Dougherty. "Maintenance, repairs, and upkeep can often be costly and unpredictable, yet they're crucial in protecting the value of your property. Taxes and insurance also add up."

He continues, "When people compare their current cost of living with Charlestown's inclusive monthly service package, they are pleasantly surprised to find that it's about the same. And in some cases, moving to Charlestown is less expensive."

More outside your door

Since moving into their corner two-bedroom apartment home with lots of natural light, Bill and Janet have been able to plan their budget with confidence each month and enjoy an active, vibrant lifestyle with newfound friends.

"We like having all the opportunities for socialization that come with living in a larger community," notes Bill. "We dine in the restaurants five nights each week to try new dishes and chat with new neighbors. There's so much at our fingertips!"

Janet participates in the Harmonizers chorus, coordinates a monthly book review in the auditorium, and meets with a trainer in the fitness center. Bill coordinates a Parkinson's support group, serves on the Safety Committee and the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Resident Advisory Council, and is involved in a sustainability workgroup that partners with the administration to make the transportation, grounds, and dining departments more sustainable.

Because each building is connected via climate-controlled walkways, every apartment home at Charlestown is within walking distance of the salon, bank, theater, woodshop, library, and fitness center.

"After we got settled in, we learned that many concerts are held at the chapel on campus," he says. "We just walk right over when one is on the schedule. It's incredible!"

To the couple's surprise, many of their neighbors knew about these exciting activities before they moved in.

"We've met residents who are the second and even third generation in their family to live here," Bill explains. "It spoke to Erickson Senior Living's consistency and reputation, which was really comforting."

'Peace of mind'

Bill and Janet were also impressed with Charlestown's fee-for-service model. Because you only pay for levels of care as you need them, residents are able to hold on to more of their assets.

"We're still active and healthy, but we appreciate knowing that care is available when we need it," says Bill. "Our children live in Colorado and Louisiana, so it gives them peace of mind knowing we have everything we need--now and in the future. When we moved here, we told them it was really a gift to them."

He adds, "Moving here was a great decision! In addition to the financial value, one of the things I enjoy the most about living here is the feeling of community. We are just delighted with our life at Charlestown."
