The Perfect Fit for Retirees in Search of a Vibrant, Worry-Free Lifestyle

Pam Smith loved her house in Sunset Beach, N.C., but when it started to become more of a headache, she decided to explore the senior living options near her daughter in Maryland.

"The house was becoming too much for me. I wanted to maintain my independence and be near family," says Pam, who was searching for a retirement community with maintenance-free residences and an array of on-site services.

When Pam learned about Charlestown, an amenity-rich Erickson Senior Living community in Catonsville, Md., she knew she didn't have to look any further. After reviewing her floor plan options, she chose the Brighton, a one-bedroom, one-bath residence--with all maintenance and repairs taken care of.

"I'm so glad I made the move! I love my apartment; it's the perfect size for me," she says.

Bright and airy

The Brighton, a popular option for those looking to rightsize their living space, boasts an open and airy layout.

"If you consider how much of your house you really use on a daily basis, you'll likely find that you spend most of your time in just a few rooms," explains Sales Counselor Jim Hawes. "The Brighton allows you to enjoy the same spaces you currently use while freeing you from the responsibility of maintaining the rest of a house you rarely use."

The Brighton's spacious living area accommodates both living room furniture and a dining set and features large picture windows that let in plenty of natural light.

"I look out over the nature trail and the brook, and it's so quiet and peaceful," notes Pam.

The Brighton also features a walk-through closet, a washer and dryer, and a kitchen complete with modern appliances, granite countertops, and a breakfast bar. Additionally, there is an option for a private balcony or walk-out garden patio.

Trade up

Pam found that she gained a vibrant lifestyle--thanks to the amenity-rich, 110-acre community she calls home.

Like every residence at Charlestown, her Brighton has quick, easy access to a wide range of amenities, including an on-site medical center, five restaurants, chapel, fitness center, indoor swimming pool, TV studio, woodshop, salon, bank, outdoor gardens, lake, bocce courts, and walking trails.

Without the typical responsibilities and costs associated with homeownership, like routine outdoor upkeep and broken appliances, Charlestown residents have more free time to pick up a new hobby or pursue their interests.

Pam attends concerts and plays, volunteers at the Treasure Sale, serves on the community's Pet Committee, has joined a quilting group, is an active member of the League of Women Voters, and is learning to play canasta.

"And I get to see my daughter and grandson a few times a week," says Pam.

"There are so many places outside of your residence to entertain, participate in activities, and relax. Residents consider the entire community as an extension of their home," says Sales Counselor Molly Fricker.

Budget friendly

Nancy "Nan" Amann and her late husband Chuck also decided to move into a Brighton, as it offered the perfect amount of living space. Plus, it fit right within their budget.

"We were looking for something affordable, and the Brighton met our needs. Everything is included in the monthly fee, so you just have one bill," says Nan, referring to the monthly service package, which bundles living costs like utilities and meals into one predictable bill.

Nan says one of her favorite parts about her home is the open concept layout because she can take in the serene, third floor view from many angles.

"One of the walls has a big window that looks out in the direction of the Chesapeake Bay, and the view is amazing!" says Nan.

A joyful life

She says that the best part of Charlestown is being part of an active community surrounded by new friends. In fact, Nan describes Charlestown as a cruise ship that never leaves port.

"There is something fun to do every day," says Nan. "There are dance groups, movies, and 300 clubs to choose from. The clubhouses have plenty of space where you can socialize or just grab a book and relax."

She continues, "If you're looking for friendship and companionship, there are plenty of opportunities to meet people. I use the pool. I walk every morning. I belong to a quilting group, and the ladies are wonderful. I dine with friends in the restaurants. It's a joy living here! I just can't brag enough about it."
