At Tallgrass Creek, Relationships Make all the Difference

About 18 months ago, Tallgrass Creek residents Janet and Bob Butterworth hosted a dinner for 25 friends who, like the Butterworths, had lived in the nearby Wycliff subdivision in Overland Park, Kans. Now, the group continues to enjoy each other's company as neighbors at Tallgrass Creek, a continuing care retirement community developed and managed by Erickson Living, also in Overland Park.

"Since that dinner, we're up to about 30 people from Wycliff who have moved here," says Bob. "It seems good news travels fast."

Sales Director Blake Marshall says quite a few residents are living at Tallgrass Creek because of what friends or family members who moved before them, have shared.

"That's always been the case, but now more than ever," says Marshall. "We continue to hear from friends of residents still living in their own homes, how hard it's been figuring out things like groceries, home repairs, and doctors' visits. They hear a different story from their friends here."

Friendly visit

About three years ago, longtime friends Harriet Darling and Judy Oberkrom discovered Tallgrass Creek together. Harriet was just "in the looking around stage" when Judy volunteered to visit Tallgrass Creek with her.

"Judy and I have been friends for about 30 years and I also worked at one point with her husband Lon," says Harriet. "I really knew no one at Tallgrass Creek, so Judy and I checked it out together."

Harriet and Judy made an appointment with sales counselor Elaine Bahr, who toured the community with them.

"Elaine was wonderful," says Harriet. "She had all the answers, was so pleasant, and not pushy at all."

Both Harriet and Judy liked what they saw at Tallgrass Creek, but neither was ready to make a decision at that point.

About a year later, Judy and Lon decided they were ready and selected an apartment home at Goldfinch Lane, a new building that was under construction. During the next year as Harriet visited the community, she decided it was time for her too, to make a change.

"It took me a while longer," says Harriet. "But I'd tired of working in the yard and it had slowly became a burden taking care of my home."

The Oberkroms moved into their brand new apartment at Tallgrass Creek in March 2019 and Harriet followed in January 2020. Even though the COVID-19 pandemic escalated soon after her move, Harriet says her timing was perfect.

"The staff has been wonderful," says Harriet. "I know their worlds like ours, have been turned upside down. But they're always here with smiles on their faces waiting on us hand and foot. I'm so fortunate to be here and glad my friends are, too."

Fountain View on the rise

Marshall reports he hears frequently from "friends of Tallgrass Creek friends" who have heard about Fountain View, the community's new residence building which is due to be completed by year end.

"Fountain View is actually the beginning of a new neighborhood for Tallgrass Creek," says Marshall. "Our new neighbors will enjoy their very own restaurants, fitness center, yoga studio, arts studio, library, game room, and more."

A climate-controlled walkway will connect to the existing neighborhood's restaurants and additional amenities such as the fitness center, beauty salon, and onsite medical center fully staffed with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals.

The five-story Fountain View features 132 spacious apartment homes and 18 floor plans, including eight that are brand new. Residences have deluxe appliances and finishes, upgraded lighting and flooring, and optional under-building parking. Many homes will include a choice of patio, balcony, or screened porch.

New Fountain View neighbors, like all those who live at Tallgrass Creek, will feel secure with a gated entrance and 24/7 security staff.

Marshall says he always enjoys visiting with prospects who have heard about Tallgrass Creek from a community member.

"The lifestyle, amenities, and level of care our residents are experiencing right now set us apart," says Marshall. "Tallgrass Creek truly sells itself."
