Whether you plan for months or years in advance, there's no right or wrong timeline for exploring your senior living options. It is important, however, that you find an environment that will best support your goals for retirement.

After visiting several area communities and ultimately deciding on Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., Linda and Mike Reberry joined the Priority List.

Joining Tallgrass Creek's Priority List is a risk-free way to reserve a future home and gain access to a wide range of resources designed to help prospective residents learn more about the community.

The decision proved to be a pivotal step in their preparation, providing more than just peace of mind. Membership offered the couple the opportunity to experience the community firsthand and interact with the residents.

"Being a Priority List member meant that we were invited to events where the staff shared information. Residents sat at our table, so we could get to know them and ask them questions. That was extremely helpful in making our decision," says Linda.

First things first
According to Tallgrass Creek Sales Director Blake Marshall, joining the Priority List is a smart step in retirement planning.

"You don't have to know what kind of floor plan you want before you join--we can help you navigate and narrow down the options," he says. "It's all part of the process and it's completely risk free."

Members pay a fully refundable $1,000 deposit and a $150-per-person nonrefundable application fee. Once this deposit is made, the date is noted as the member's Priority List date. Members then have the opportunity to select a preferred floor plan, that once available, will be offered to them, with right of first refusal, based on their joining date.

There is no penalty should the preferred residence become available before a prospective resident is ready to move--it's simply offered to the next member on the list and their Priority List status remains the same.

"The Priority List is so much more than a waiting list," Marshall says. "You're setting yourself up for success in the future."

Reaping the rewards
When Mike and Linda decided to move to a continuing care retirement community, they had more than just themselves in mind. They understood firsthand the stress and emotional strain that comes with handling the estates and care decisions for loved ones. Their move to Tallgrass Creek was driven by a thoughtful desire to make life easier for their loved ones and to ensure they had control over important decisions.

To aid in their decision-making process, the couple took advantage of a "Live the Life" stay, a benefit exclusive to Priority List members. During the stay, members enjoy the opportunity to stay on campus for one or two nights while enjoying access to the same amenities and services as current Tallgrass Creek community members.

"We met people and participated in activities, including exercise classes and pickleball, Linda recalls. "The sales team arranged for a couple to join us at every meal. We never ate a meal alone, and we could see the friendliness of the people and how involved everyone was."

A smooth move
Decision made, the couple took advantage of another Priority List perk--working with Planning and Moving Consultant Nancy Worthington for help in determining what to move to their new home, as well as selling their house and moving.

Worthington recommended a variety of trusted moving resources, including real estate agent Sherri Hines, and Gentle Changes, a moving company specializing in senior moves.

"For our move, everything just worked out for us," says Linda. "The house sold quickly. The recommended [real estate agent] was wonderful. We used the moving company, and they helped me not bring too much. We used everything they recommended, and everyone was wonderful."

According to Marshall, people who make the most of their Priority List membership tend to enjoy a more seamless move.

"The people who utilize the resources available with their Priority List membership are engaged and more informed. They make a smoother move and start enjoying the Tallgrass Creek lifestyle right away, even on day one! Their bed is made, their dishes are put away. It's easier and less stressful when you utilize our services. That's what they're there for," he says.

Linda and Mike appreciate all of the advantages their Priority List membership provided.

"The Priority List was extremely helpful in making our decision," Linda says. "We felt very confident, and since we've moved in, we're even more pleased."
