Five High School Students to Receive Combined Total of $12,000 in Scholarships From Tallgrass Creek Residents
OVERLAND PARK, KS (June 4, 2012) -- One high school student from Johnson County will receive a $4,000 scholarship, and other four students will receive $2,000 scholarships at an awards ceremony this month at Tallgrass Creek retirement community, where the students have worked part-time.
This $4,000 scholarship recipient is Patrick Duong, a graduate of Olathe East High School who plans to attend Johnson County Community College. The $2,000 scholarship recipients are Brian Click, a graduate of Blue Valley Southwest High School who will attend Kansas State University; Marcus Ealom, an Olathe East High School graduate who is heading to Kansas State University; Brixanna Edwards, a graduate of Blue Valley North High School who plans to attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City; and Andrew Powers, a Blue Valley West High School graduate who will attend Kansas State University.
Scholarship funds were raised by Tallgrass Creek residents to show their appreciation of the students' work and assist them financially in their post-secondary education. A total of $27,540 was raised with 70 percent of Tallgrass Creek residents participating in this year's scholarship fundraising drive.
The scholarship recipients have worked hard to maintain their grades while working at Tallgrass Creek, in addition to their extra-curricular obligations. "For most of the students this is their first job, and Tallgrass Creek provides the opportunity to interact with over 280 residents who become their surrogate grandparents," said Jill Cline, the community's Philanthropy Manager.
The awards ceremony will be held June 18 at the Tallgrass Creek campus, 13800 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS.
