Searching for a retirement community that offers ease and value? Look no further! Cedar Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Pompton Plains, N.J., boasts a variety of one- and two-bedroom residences--completely maintenance-free--for an affordable price.

With designs including the 704-square-foot Brighton and the 1,006-square-foot Fairmont, there's a floor plan for everyone.

Just ask Cathy Naughter and Mary McGuire, sisters turned next-door neighbors who moved to the sought-after community within one year of each other.

Hobby space

Cathy was living in a condo on the Jersey Shore when she decided it was time to start researching her senior living options--close to home, that is.

"I chose to stay in New Jersey," says Cathy, noting that family is close by. "Cedar Crest was the only one that stood out to me and was the only one I chose to visit!"

When Cathy visited campus, she had the opportunity to tour several floor plans, including the two-bedroom, one-bath Fairmont. All one- and two-bedroom floor plans feature spacious living and dining areas, large bedrooms, walk-in closets, linen storage, an updated kitchen, and a washer and dryer.

"When I walked into the apartment, I could see the beautiful Ramapo Mountains through the floor-to-ceiling window. The view is breathtaking," she recalls.

But Cathy was especially interested in the Fairmont for its second bedroom. "I enjoy sewing, doing artwork, and reading. The second bedroom is perfect for that," she explains.

Now that she's settled in, Cathy is positive she chose the perfect floor plan for her lifestyle. "I love my apartment. I have room for everything I need," she says.

Close to family

After flying from her house in Venice, Fla., to visit her sister, Mary could see why Cathy was set on Cedar Crest.

Also impressed with the community and appreciating its proximity to family, Mary decided to join Cedar Crest's Priority List, which affords members right of first refusal on residences, invites to exclusive events and seminars, and realty and moving assistance.

"Venice was wonderful, but I wanted to be nearer to my kids," Mary says.

Following in her sister's footsteps, Mary learned everything she could about the community and asked Sales Counselor Jessica Cirelli to send her videos of all the residences Mary liked.

"I had a pretty large house in Florida, and I realized I didn't need all that room," says Mary. "I was rattling around in that house. I knew I didn't need a lot in my new place."

This realization led Mary to choose a one-bedroom, one-bath residence--right next door to Cathy!

A chance to rightsize

Sales Director Ray Guarino notes that for retirees like Mary who are looking to rightsize their living space, selecting a one- or two-bedroom floor plan is a great choice.

He notes that two other homes, the one-bedroom, one-bath with den Georgetown and the two-bedroom, one-bath Flagstaff are also popular.

"The square footage of our one- and two-bedroom floor plans is often equivalent to the square footage that prospective residents are currently using in their large houses," explains Guarino. "Plus, many people find that the sale of their house is more than enough to cover the cost of a one- or two-bedroom residence, making it an affordable option."

To make the transition as seamless as possible, Mary began considering what she wanted to bring with her even before she moved.

"I didn't bring a stick of furniture with me--just a few cherished items," says Mary. "I only brought pieces that I loved or meant something to me. And the ones I didn't bring, I photographed."

Exceeding expectations

Since settling into their new homes, Cathy and Mary have found that they have more free time to participate in activities and make new friends.

"I have wonderful, friendly neighbors I often dine with," says Cathy.

"That's part of what makes Cedar Crest such a great deal," says Guarino. "In addition to your new home, you have access to an array of amenities--restaurants, a library, hair salon, fitness center--and dozens of engaging clubs."

"Cedar Crest has exceeded my expectations, and it got even better when my sister moved in next door!" says Cathy. "The icing on the cake is that one son now lives just 18 minutes away."

Mary has two daughters living nearby who visit often. "One stopped by today and took me out to lunch. I've missed that," says Mary. "Plus, I have a real sense of security here--and that's a wonderful thing!"
