A Smart Financial Decision Grants Peace of Mind for Seniors

Since moving to Tallgrass Creek, the Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., Jane Watts has been living life to the fullest. She loves to have fun and keep active by exercising, playing bingo, and hanging out with friends.

But that wasn't always the case. As a widow, Jane came to realize that taking care of a large four-bedroom house by herself was an increasing amount of work and expense. Water started leaking into the basement, the gutters needed attention, and the house needed new paint. "I really didn't want to spend money on that," she says.

While visiting friends at Tallgrass Creek, Jane realized that she didn't have to. She did the math, adding up all the repair bills and property taxes she was paying, and saw that moving to Tallgrass Creek was a good value proposition.

A life of ease

Since moving in 2017, Jane has discovered that community life offers so much more than relief from home maintenance headaches.

"The restaurants are wonderful," she says, and she appreciates the convenience of having on-site medical care in case she needs it.

Safety was another important consideration for Jane. "I feel very secure here. There are security patrols and quick emergency response, and, of course, all the residents look out for each other too."

"I feel so much safer and happier here," she says. "Now, if I have a problem in my home, I call General Services, and they take care of it."

Secure future

High school sweethearts Bob and Lyn Swan had a good life in Warminster, Pa., where they raised three children and ran their own business.

"We were 63 when we began looking at our future. We knew we would eventually move to senior living," says Bob.

Over the years, the couple cared for their ailing parents. They did so with love, but they never wanted to put that kind of burden on their own children.

"So, one of our primary goals was having a secure future," explains Bob.

They found the peace of mind they were looking for at Ann's Choice, the Erickson Senior Living community in Bucks County, Pa.

"With the on-site medical center; access to additional levels of health care, if necessary; and the guarantee that we would live here for the rest of our lives, it just seemed like a no-brainer," he says.

A new chapter

When Ann's Choice opened in 2005, Bob and Lyn were among the first retirees to move in, eager to start the next chapter in their lives - in the best environment for them.

Eighteen years later, the Swans are happy they made the move. Lyn says, "Ann's Choice had so much to offer at the time, and it still does."

The on-site medical center has been a great convenience for them, allowing them to see doctors on campus while continuing to see their longtime medical providers, as well.

They have both taken on leadership positions in the community's Protestant Faith Council and are very active in a long list of clubs and activities.

In good hands

Lynn Muety knew the peace of mind that Erickson Senior Living affords its residents and their families - her parents lived at Charlestown, the first Erickson Senior Living community in Catonsville, Md.

When her father passed away, Lynn says it was a relief knowing that her mother was in good hands.

"If I called and she didn't answer, I never worried because I knew she was either playing pinochle or going to lunch with her girlfriends," says Lynn.

She adds, "Later, my mom went from independent living to assisted living to continuing care, and all of that was seamless. I knew they were making sure she was being taken care of."

Continuing the tradition

In 2021, that positive experience was on Lynn's mind when she and her husband Jack decided to move to Ashby Ponds, the Erickson Senior Living community in Ashburn, Va. "We told our kids, 'This is a gift we are giving you. You are never going to have to worry about us.'"

Since moving to Ashby Ponds, the Muetys are having the time of their lives.

"I'm really glad we moved in when we were young enough to enjoy all the amenities and activities they have here," says Lynn. "This is the place to go when you want to make life easy, have fun, get involved, make friends, and just enjoy!"
