Following his graduation from Towson University in December 2022, Matthew Ritchie began exploring a career in sales.
“I have a passion for sales and helping people,” he says. “But the jobs I was finding required a lot of cold calling, and I knew that wasn’t right for me. Things hit home for me when my grandmother began looking at continuing care retirement communities (CCRC). I wanted someone to help her, and that’s when I started thinking about doing the same for other people. My first thought was Erickson Senior Living. My great-grandfather was one of the first residents of Charlestown [an Erickson Senior Living community in Parkville, Md.]
Matthew applied for and earned a position as a sales associate at Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living-managed community in Springfield, Va. This past March, he began his exciting new career, witnessing the company’s commitment to providing a vibrant work experience by investing in its employees.
“The services we offer to more than 30,000 residents nationwide are only as good as the people providing them,” says Alan Butler, Chief Executive Officer of Erickson Senior Living. “That is why we take the hiring process very seriously in order to identify the best people. As a growth company with a bright future, we strive to be an employer of choice by providing an unparalleled workplace experience.”
In the 6-months since his arrival at Greenspring, Matthew has found that his career is much more than a job, providing him with opportunities and support for achieving his professional goals.
“The first thing that struck me, first and foremost, is how my team makes me feel valued and important,” he says. “They ask for my opinion. At my previous jobs, that wasn’t the case. I feel comfortable asking questions.”
Matthew’s team also supports his career goals. He meets regularly with Greenspring Sales Director Franklin Funes to discuss his professional and personal development.
“We talk about everything, how things are going, what I’m looking for in my position, and what will help me get to where I want to be,” he says. “Because of these conversations, I’m now shadowing our planning and moving consultant. I appreciate Erickson’s commitment to upward progression and dedication to expanding my knowledge so that I can grow in my career.”
Matthew also enjoys the many advantages of Erickson Senior Living’s generous benefits program, including annual well-being visits, access to wellness workshops and fitness challenges, and reimbursement of up to $260 for personal wellness expenses for team members enrolled in an Erickson Senior Living medical plan.
“I’m very impressed with our benefits,” he says. “Working at Greenspring offers great work/life balance. And, although it sounds cliché, this is so much more to me than a job. And that’s because of our residents. In my position, I am first introduced to residents when they reserve an apartment home. It’s such a cool thing to see the same resident, a few months later, happy in their new home. I’m grateful for the team-oriented, family-centered community here at Greenspring. Each day is a new adventure.”
