Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va., is celebrating its 26th anniversary in November with the completion of a stunning, multiyear renovation project.
Over the last three years, Greenspring has introduced substantial upgrades throughout campus, including a refresh of all three clubhouses. Hunters Crossing, the last clubhouse under construction, unveiled two new restaurants, a tavern, golf simulator, fitness flex space, and a new conference center this summer.
"The renovation of Hunters Crossing is absolutely marvelous!" says resident William "Michael" Briggs, who moved to Greenspring with his wife Sandy last December. "The result is a warm, welcoming gathering place with several new additions that allow residents to enjoy activities and time with neighbors."
Taste of the good life
The formal Jefferson restaurant was redesigned to create a second dining venue, Seasons. In addition to serving dinner, Seasons is open for lunch with a menu of entree salads, burgers, sandwiches, and flatbread pizzas.
Also included in the renovation is The Tavern bar area, perfect for joining friends for a glass of wine or a specialty cocktail before dinner. The Tavern also boasts a large TV, golf simulator, jukebox, and billiards table, making it a new favorite gathering place for residents.
"Recently, Sandy and I met a couple we've become very good friends with for a drink at the new bar area," says Michael. "It was delightful."
On the virtual green
But for Michael, an avid golfer, the real star of the project is the new state-of-the-art golf simulator. In fact, it played a key role in his decision to move to Greenspring.
"The golf simulator was a requirement for me," he says. "Public courses can be fairly pricey. If you enjoy playing three or four times a week like I do, a simulator is essential."
This summer, during a men's mix and mingle event at The Tavern in honor of Men's Health Week, Michael demonstrated the simulator to attendees. With the U.S. Open on the TV, he led guests through a simulated Pinehurst golf course.
"There are two aspects to the simulator. One is a basic driving range, perfect for anyone trying to improve their game or get back into the sport," says Michael. "The golfer uses real golf clubs and balls to hit, as hard as they can, at the screen. The simulator provides useful feedback. It's a great way to practice."
He continues, "The second part is the ability to simulate play, with up to four people at a time, at different courses around the world."
Added amenities
The new flex fitness space added to Hunters Crossing is designed to accommodate smaller group activities.
Residents can also visit Greenspring's main fitness center in the Town Center clubhouse and the satellite fitness center in Village Square clubhouse.
The conference center at Hunters Crossing, the largest multipurpose room on campus, was updated with all new lighting and sound.
In addition, all hallways were completely redesigned with new paint, carpeting, and the installation of LED lighting--resulting in a beautiful, modern look that's particularly impactful to the resident art wall located in Hunters Crossing.
Insightful input
To ensure residents would love the new features in the community they call home, the multiyear project was planned and completed with direct input from Greenspring residents.
"Management always establishes a resident committee to garner input before and during renovations," says Chuck Davidson, president of the Resident Advisory Council. "I've seen significant change result from this input. Cabinetry in craft rooms was modified, the number of six-top restaurant tables were increased, and art wall areas were enlarged."
He continues, "Residents have a unique perspective since we are the users of the resulting improved facility. Obtaining and acting on this perspective is critical. We are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this process!"
Time to enjoy
In August, shortly after the completion of the project, Hunters Crossing hosted the community's first expo in several years. Resident groups, departments at Greenspring, and community partners had tables to share information about their events and services.
Hunters Crossing will also host the upcoming pet parade, America Recycles shred event, and Greenspring's 26th birthday celebration on November 17.
"The improvements at Hunters Crossing have given us an attractive and unique 'corner' in the middle of our beautiful community," says Michael. "Greenspring is a wonderful place to socialize and enjoy our lives."
