Greenspring, the Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va., has unveiled exciting new enhancements to Village Square - one of the community's three clubhouses.

Village Square now offers both an updated and a brand-new restaurant, revitalized theater, patio dining area, and a variety of other improvements.

"Our residents enjoy spending time in spaces that promote connection," says Franklin Funes, Greenspring's sales director. "The renovation of our clubhouses ensures that we offer warm, welcoming places for people to enjoy conversations, host their families, and spend time together as a community."

Valuable input

As president of Greenspring's Resident Advisory Council (RAC), Chuck Davidson is pleased to see residents' needs and wants addressed through both current and future renovation plans.

"The overarching goal of the RAC is to ensure that residents' voices are heard," says Chuck. "When asked about the community's updates, we identified four important factors that, we believe, maintain our status as a vibrant community."

These factors included modern, versatile amenities; competent and caring staff, which Greenspring already has in spades; numerous resident-run activities; and a family-oriented mindset, where residents can enjoy being out and about in the community even more than staying in their apartment homes.

"The repositioning of Village Square and the upcoming updates to Hunters Crossing, our third neighborhood, have greatly benefitted these factors," notes Chuck.

Showtime

One of the most exciting updates at Village Square is the refurbished community theater. Performers, lecturers, and guests alike love the new seating, lighting, and sound system.

The theater, utilized by performing groups like the choir and Greenspring Players drama club, is also home to a variety of other programs such as guest speakers and weekly movie showings.

"From a resident's point of view, this revamp is a major accomplishment," says Chuck. "The theater is, by far, more modern and beautiful than we could've imagined. It's a giant step forward. Not only is the general ambience better, but the stage, theater lighting, and sound are greatly improved."

"Creating more opportunities for residents to get together and do the things they love was at the top of our list," says Funes. "Our new theater is a great example of this goal."

A focus on food

In addition to the theater's renovations, Greenspring's new restaurant, Village Eatery, has earned rave reviews for its breakfast and lunch service.

"It's a great place to grab a cup of coffee or a sandwich, talk with neighbors, or read the newspaper," says Chuck. "The Greenspring community enjoys spots like this that enable people to get together and enjoy each other's company."

Further enhancing residents' dining options, the popular Woodland Skies restaurant - one of Greenspring's premier destinations for full-service dining - received a facelift. Updated décor and the creation of a bar area, offering specialty drinks for guests awaiting their tables, has drawn large crowds.

Later this year, an outdoor dining area will be added to complete Woodland Skies' update.

Looking ahead

Now, Village Square also features a personal reflection/meditation space, new billiard tables, an updated lobby, and multipurpose rooms.

"Throughout all the renovations to Village Square, we've managed to maintain the same Greenspring 'feel' - just a fresh, modern take on it," says Funes. "With all the large windows looking out on beautiful trees, our community resembles a woodsy resort lodge, and we don't plan on changing that."

As a new year rolls in, staff and residents are looking forward to the renovations scheduled for Hunter's Crossing Clubhouse in 2023. Planned updates include the installation of an indoor golf simulator, the addition of a tavern-style restaurant, the revitalization of the Jefferson restaurant, and lobby and classroom enhancements.

As construction is executed, Greenspring's leaders stay in constant contact with the RAC and members of the community.

"Communication is very important. Everyone is curious about the ongoing changes, so we make it a priority to keep residents informed throughout the process," says Funes. "Information about the community's updates is shared in many ways, including resident town halls and RAC meetings. Melissa Robson, Greenspring's executive director, also appears on our daily television show to provide details."

"My wife Nita and I feel blessed to have an administration that works in partnership with us," says Chuck. "I'm not sure if perfection is possible, but I believe that by working together, we're getting closer and closer. We are proud to be members of the Greenspring community."

Greenspring, celebrating its milestone 25th anniversary in 2023, is conveniently located in the heart of Fairfax County.
