"My plan is to keep active as long as I can," says George Gariepy, who moved to Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va., last May.
Thanks to maintenance-free apartment homes that create more time for pursuing hobbies and interests, residents like George are going to be booked and busy in 2024.
"This year, I look forward to dancing; playing pickleball, poker, and billiards; and exploring many of the activities offered at Greenspring," he says. "I also plan to volunteer with the Catholic community here."
Maintenance-free living
Moving into a maintenance-free apartment home was a game changer for George, who lived in Ocala, Fla., for 37 years.
"I reached a point where I was tired of taking care of my house and property," he explains. "So I spent about a year looking at retirement communities in both Florida and Northern Virginia--where my daughter Sharon and her family live. I am also familiar with the area, having lived in Springfield from 1961 to 1995 when I worked for the Naval Sea Systems Command."
When he learned about Greenspring's worry-free lifestyle, convenient location, and array of top-notch amenities, he was sold.
"I love my apartment home!" says George, who no longer has to stress over appliance repairs and lawn care. "I'm close to family, and Greenspring boasts a beautiful campus filled with the amenities and activities I was hoping for."
As George approaches his one-year anniversary as a Greenspring resident, he expresses gratitude for the vibrant, engaging community he is proud to call home.
"Meeting people and making friends is a wonderful part of community life here," he notes. "I hope to expand my social circle even further this year."
'Never bored'
Clint and Vickie Lambert, Greenspring residents since 2007, also have a positive outlook on the year ahead, eager to try new activities, socialize with friends, and increase community involvement.
"We feel that the greatest advantage of living at Greenspring is having the freedom to do whatever we want, whenever we want to do it," says Clint, pointing to the free time they've gained since settling into their apartment home.
Together, the couple attends weekly chapel services, watches yacht club races on the pond, sees on-campus movies, and participates in weekly trivia nights. Clint also hosts four programs on Greenspring TV, the community's in-house TV channel.
They are also looking forward to more Entertainment Roundtable shows, which are performed by various actors, musicians, and entertainers.
"We enjoy many activities and attend fun events that keep us stimulated and engaged with others," says Clint. "There is always something to do here! Even after almost 17 years, we are never bored."
Investing in the future
And with recent upgrades across the community, the Lamberts and their neighbors are finding even more ways to stay active.
"2024 will be an exciting year for Greenspring," says Sales Director Franklin Funes. "This year, we'll see the completion of our community's renovations. Upgrades have been made throughout our restaurants, activity spaces, and continuing care neighborhood."
Greenspring staff members plan to build on the community's growth by exploring new avenues for social engagement.
"Recently, we've introduced new activities to enhance social connections, such as hosting the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, celebrating our recent 25th anniversary gala, and planning themed dining events," says Funes. "All of these experiences aim to bring residents together."
Full-steam ahead
Greenspring's growth is backed by Erickson Senior Living, known for its financial strength, vibrant culture, and expertise. That experience includes over 40 years of operational excellence, which isn't possible without the support of thousands of team members nationwide.
"Like residents at all Erickson Senior Living communities, we have peace of mind, knowing that staff members are looking out for us 24/7," says Clint. "As a result, we truly feel like we're part of a big family. Caring employees make sure that we are safe and secure and plan regular activities and events that help us stay involved."
Because Greenspring residents and their apartment homes are well-cared for, George plans on making 2024 a year of travel too.
"In addition to my current activities, I plan on cruising to the Caribbean and Europe and going on tours of Italy and other European areas!" he says.
