At Greenspring, a senior living community managed by Erickson Senior Living, extraordinary dining experiences are an important part of the vibrant retirement lifestyle that residents enjoy each day.
As part of their commitment to culinary excellence, Greenspring Dining Services recently held the 2021 Taste of Greenspring Culinary Competition. Three teams of culinary professionals, including sous chef, line and prep cooks from across the community’s dining venues, competed. Each one prepared three dishes, a starter, entrée, and dessert, for the judges to score.
Judges included Betty Christman, Greenspring’s Resident Council President, and Tyshan Wilson, Associate Executive Director, along with dining and culinary professionals from Erickson Senior Living and sister community Ashby Ponds, located in Ashburn, Va.
Live entertainment was provided by resident favorite, The Jazz Trotters. The Taste of Greenspring competition has become an annual resident favorite activity, where residents not only taste the culinary creations of their dedicated and talented culinary team, but enjoy the opportunity to engage with the chefs and vote for their favorite dish.
This year’s first place winners for the second time were the Frontline Prodigies, from the Fireside restaurant. Their menu consisted of a sushi du plate starter, pork belly ramen bowl entrée, and mango and passionfruit cheesecake for dessert. Each member of the winning team was presented with the DeSantolo Culinarian’s Award, a $500 stipend to be used towards continuing their education, development in the hospitality industry or culinary resources and tools.
Other awards included Resident’s Choice, which went to The Spice Queens team from the Jefferson restaurant and Most Creative Dish, won by The Traveled Chefs from the Woodland Skies restaurant.
