When Raja and Anu Iyer, longtime residents of Bethesda, Md., began exploring their senior living options, they were looking for a retirement community near their daughters that offered a range of on-campus health care services.
The Grandview, a planned Erickson Senior Living community being constructed where the Marriott headquarters in Bethesda once stood, fit the bill perfectly.
"We read in the Washington Post that Marriott was moving, and then our daughter said, 'Mom, this is where you should live because it will be close to me and right in your neighborhood,'" recalls Anu.
And as a continuing care retirement community, The Grandview will offer a medical center and continuum of health care services on site.
With all their boxes checked, the couple decided to join the Priority List and reserve a residence--eager for the community's opening later this year.
Joining the Priority List
Joining the Priority List was an easy decision, the couple says, especially since the $1,000 deposit was completely refundable.
"We wanted to choose the apartment we wanted, so we joined early," says Raja. "We also thought this would give us an opportunity to learn how the community is growing as construction progresses--as well as the restaurants, health care options, and all kinds of other information."
This valuable, exclusive information is shared at educational seminars hosted by The Grandview's sales team, who impressed Raja and Anu right away.
The couple also saw the Priority List as a chance to meet potential future neighbors.
"Since it's a brand-new building with a lot of residents, the clubs, cultural activities, and events The Grandview organizes for us gives us the opportunity to meet new people with whom we share common interests," he adds.
Appealing features
Once they joined the Priority List, the Iyers turned their attention to reserving a residence.
The couple chose the McKinley floor plan--a large two-bedroom, two-bath design with a balcony--on the fourth floor of Potomac Heights, the community's first residence building.
"Initially, Anu and I had picked out the Madison, but then, our older daughter and Anu decided that the McKinley was more appropriate. Then they brought me in to make sure that I concurred with their decision," Raja says, with a laugh.
The larger laundry room and additional counter space in the kitchen were appealing features.
"The McKinley really suits all of our needs with just enough room to fit the things that we want to take," says Raja.
A vibrant lifestyle
Raja and Anu worked hard before retirement--Raja at the World Bank, where he continues to consult after retirement, and Anu as a Montessori school teacher for 28 years at The Woods Academy in Bethesda.
Thanks to their new residence, the couple will have plenty of time to visit their family and travel abroad.
"Luckily, nine months after I retired, our granddaughter was born, so now my grandma duties took over," says Anu, with a smile. "One of our daughters lives a mile from where The Grandview will be, while our other daughter lives in nearby Washington, D.C."
A fresh perspective
Raja adds, "Visiting different countries gives us fresh perspectives, and we like to see how other people and other communities live. It also reminds us how fortunate we are in the United States."
"As part of Raja's job at the World Bank, he used to travel a lot to China, Indonesia, and Mongolia, and I traveled with him. Last year, we visited Morocco and spent Christmas in Jamaica with the entire family--our two daughters, granddaughter, and son-in-law," says Anu, who also travels to India regularly to visit her family.
Peace of mind
Most of all, Raja and Anu appreciate that they will gain peace of mind while staying in an area they know and love.
"Erickson has a great reputation and is a solid, reliable company," says Raja.
"We can shop at the same grocery store and keep our doctors," adds Anu. "I didn't want my children to have to make decisions for me when I am old. It was something that I wanted to take off their plate, and now I have."
