When Dr. Larry Anderson, a rheumatologist, and his wife Lora Jane ("Janie") began exploring their senior living options, they were looking for a retirement community near their children with an abundance of activities.
With an array of amenities, opportunities for socialization, and proximity to their children, Ashby Ponds, an Erickson Senior Living community in Ashburn, Va., stood above the rest.
While health care wasn't on the couple's checklist, Ashby Ponds' on-campus medical center was a welcome bonus. In the six years since their move, they've witnessed firsthand just how important accessibility to quality health care is.
"Because we moved from North Carolina, maintaining relationships with local doctors was not an option," says Larry. "It's a big advantage to have the medical staff here on campus. It is also very convenient to have several specialists regularly see patients at the medical center, including podiatry, audiology, dermatology, and ophthalmology. It's wonderful!"
The doctor is in
Staffed with four board-certified physicians, a nurse practitioner, licensed social worker, podiatrist, practice administrator, and five medical assistants, it's easy for residents to receive quality, senior-focused care at the medical center.
Dr. Shaveta Kotwal, Ashby Ponds' medical director, sees patients as well.
"I've always been impressed with Ashby Ponds' on-site medical care," says Larry. "I find the medical staff to be friendly and accessible. Dr. Kotwal is our primary care doctor. She always listens carefully to our concerns and addresses them appropriately."
"What sets Ashby Ponds' health care apart is the accessibility. Residents can visit the medical center on campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," explains Kotwal. "In addition to annual wellness checkups, we offer vaccines and sick visits. We have an in-house lab as well."
Telehealth appointments and home visits are also available upon request.
Just a call away
The medical center offers same-day appointments--something nearly unheard of in most doctors' offices. Associate Practice Administrator Emily Velasquez manages the medical center's daily schedule to meet needs that arise.
"We reserve daily appointments so that we can accommodate these requests. We take care of acute issues, prescriptions, and preventative treatments in a timely manner," notes Kotwal. "In fact, many residents find that their existing doctor can't accommodate a same-day appointment--and then call to schedule an appointment here."
"The few times we've needed a same-day appointment, we've never been denied the request," confirms Larry.
Freedom to choose
Residents can keep their current primary care physicians and still use the medical center for flu shots, tests, and screenings.
"No resident is ever denied care at the medical center," says Kotwal. "Residents who continue to see their own doctor are certainly welcome!"
She adds, "However, we encourage residents who choose to keep their providers to establish themselves at the medical center by visiting once a year to keep their records up-to-date. In case of an emergency, this helps us come up with the best treatment plan based on their health history."
Upon request, health records can be shared with family members--a real draw for Larry and Janie.
"Our daughter is our health care power of attorney. Dr. Kotwal keeps her in the loop," says Larry. "Our daughter shares my confidence in the health care we receive and enjoys peace of mind knowing we are well cared for."
Continuum of care
As a continuing care retirement community, Ashby Ponds also has a continuing care neighborhood on campus--offering rehabilitation services, assisted living, and memory care--to support residents who would benefit from higher levels of care.
"I really appreciate the continuity of care," says Larry. "Janie is now in memory care at Maple Grove. I rest comfortably knowing that she is getting such good care."
Larry appreciates that he can take advantage of everything Ashby Ponds has to offer and spend time with his wife of 61 years.
"Socialization is so important at our age," says Larry. "I enjoy dinners with neighbors and swim at the fitness center. I also enjoy opportunities to sing. Studies demonstrate that all of these things positively affect my well-being. I'm very grateful to live here."
