David Bauer was looking to embark on a worry-free life when he and his wife Betty moved to Ashby Ponds, an Erickson Senior Living community in Ashburn, Va.

"We wanted to downsize and simplify our life," says David, who was drawn to the community's maintenance-free apartment homes--and lively atmosphere.

"Ultimately," he continues, "we chose Ashby Ponds because the residents are so engaged. The amenities and activities seemed to facilitate socialization that would be consistent with our active lifestyle."

This vibrant, social lifestyle is the main reason why David's so optimistic about 2024--just as he was when he moved to the community in 2017.

More time to volunteer

David says he is looking forward to more volunteer opportunities at Maple Grove, Ashby Ponds' continuing care neighborhood, which has had a greater impact on his life than expected.

"Having a medical center and continuing care on site became a priority for us a few years after we moved in," he recalls. Betty lived in Maple Grove for a year to receive memory care before passing away in late 2022.

"Everything was as graceful as possible," says David, who's grateful that they chose a community where Betty could receive quality, convenient care right on campus.

Now, to give back to the continuing care neighborhood, David helps lead music therapy activities. "I also coordinate activities that support the spouses of residents who are dealing with cognitive issues," he notes.

"Outside of Maple Grove, I play pickleball, go on hikes, and attend musical performances. Pickleball continues to be a great vehicle for me to make lasting friendships with other active residents. Any event or gathering that provides socialization and physical activity is right up my alley," says David, with a smile.

'Exceeded expectations'

With no house maintenance to worry about, Ashby Ponds' newest residents also appreciate the ability to take advantage of the wide range of activities.

"Ashby Ponds has exceeded expectations!" says Carole Nicholas, who moved to the community in August 2021. "That year, I started playing pickleball--I love it for both the exercise and the camaraderie."

This year, she's eager to work on more quilting projects with friends and grow more plants in the community garden as a garden club member.

"The garden brings so much serenity to residents," she notes. "I also plan to continue volunteering as a resident ambassador in the years to come. I enjoy the drama club productions, the concerts on the lawn in the summer, and the other musical performances throughout the year, so those will be slated into my calendar as well."

Looking to practice her paddle swings more in the new year, Carole is also excited about the two outdoor pickleball courts coming to Ashby Ponds in 2024.

Welcoming new neighbors

Alicia Sommers, who also moved to Ashby Ponds in 2017, cites the community's expansion as one reason why she is so optimistic about the year ahead.

In 2024, the new Black Rock Bistro will open and several new amenities--including an outdoor sports court, golf simulator, and archery area--will be installed.

Erickson Senior Living's vision for 2024 is all about growth and opportunity. By investing over $500 million in upgrades and renovations to its existing communities across the country, Erickson will continue to provide thousands of seniors with the amenities and services they need to enjoy a fulfilling retirement.

"I find that the addition of new amenities and expanded activities has been increasingly beneficial to my well-being," says Alicia.

Harpers Mill, Ashby Ponds' second-to-last residence building, will also open in early 2024. "Ashby Ponds is a special place," says Alicia. "Everyone is going out of their way to prepare for and welcome the new Harpers Mill residents!"

Investing in the future

At Ashby Ponds, optimism stems from a worry-free lifestyle that provides more time for residents to explore hobbies, an environment that supports meaningful social connections, and an investment in the future.

"This is an exciting year for our entire community," says Executive Director Tom Channon. "In addition to warmly welcoming our newest residents, we look forward to not only meeting but exceeding our promise to provide the best in retirement living to each of our valued residents."
