Residents at Windsor Run, the Erickson Senior Living community in Southeast Charlotte, enjoy amenities and activities that enhance their lives.

Since moving to Windsor Run, an Erickson Senior Living community in Matthews, N.C., Lowell and Macie Keel enjoy a fully engaged lifestyle complete with social connections and the opportunity to forge new friendships and time to spend on activities they love.

"When planning for our move, our financial advisor suggested we find a community where we'd always have someone to eat with," says Lowell. "That's because socialization and activity are so important. Whether its participating in activities we enjoy or eating with neighbors each night, we've found it very easy to make friends."

Local ties

The Keels--originally from Kinston, N.C.--relocated to Charlotte, N.C., 23 years ago to be closer to their son Lee and his family.

"Lee told us he's glad we moved to Windsor Run before he had to ask us to consider moving somewhere," says Macie. "We made the decision for ourselves and are very happy. Not only do we spend time with family like we did before our move, we also enjoy many of the same social and volunteer activities."

"Because we previously lived just three miles from Windsor Run," explains Lowell, "I still maintain ties with friends in the local community. Four mornings a week, we meet up at the YMCA for group exercise classes. I then come back to Windsor Run and have lunch in the cafe or in our apartment."

The couple also continues to attend First Baptist of Matthews, where they've been members for over 20 years.

Giving back

On campus, Macie and Lowell enjoy giving back through volunteer activities.

Each Saturday morning, Lowell offers his time and expertise to Tech Help, a resident-run group that provides assistance with the My Erickson app, TVs, phones, computers, and printers. He is also an integral member of the Windsor Run Trail Committee.

"When planning for our new nature trail, I was one of the people who helped set up the rules and regulations for planting wildflowers and trees, deciding where to put birdhouses, and suggesting wet areas for the garden club," he says. "Our committee operates a lot like a national park in an effort to maintain this beautiful habitat."

Macie serves on the welcoming committee, ensuring the community's newest residents feel at home.

"We take a little gift to each new resident shortly after their move," she says. "We provide our phone numbers, encouraging them to reach out. I also invite new residents to lunch or dinner."

Together, the couple works with the sales team as ambassadors, providing tours of campus to prospective residents and answering their questions about daily life.

"We both enjoy meeting new people, and we understand what it's like to be in the decision-making process," says Macie. "In addition to leading tours, we attend luncheons and host people for dinner when they spend a night in the Live the Life suite."

More free time

The Keels find that Windsor Run's worry-free lifestyle provides them plenty of time to pursue all their hobbies and interests.

"In our former townhouse, we were responsible for all the maintenance," says Macie. "Now, we don't have to worry about repairs or replacing appliances. Whatever we need is swiftly addressed and well taken care of."

In his newfound free time, Lowell loves exploring photography and astronomy.

"At our photography club meetings, we are given a monthly assignment," he says. "We've photographed shadows, still life, wildflowers, and even water."

As part of the astronomy club, Lowell recently assisted with a presentation for the solar eclipse.

"We showed a presentation from NASA on the eclipse, provided solar eclipse glasses, and watched a video of the eclipse from different locations throughout the country," he explains. "One of our members used his telescope to project the eclipse onto the sidewalk so residents could follow the progression."

Macie attends Women of Windsor club meetings and especially likes sharing nightly dinners with neighbors at on-campus restaurants.

"The beauty of dining together is that in sitting and talking, you make personal connections--and we've made so many!" she says. "Once, while dining with a couple, we discovered that our sons previously worked together. We met another couple and discovered that our sons roomed together in college."

'Great decision'

Reflecting on their rewarding life at Windsor Run, the Keels are glad they followed their financial advisor's advice.

"It's awesome how often we connect with people," notes Macie. "It's just one of so many reasons why moving to Windsor Run was a great decision."
