Every time a new residence building opens at Highland Springs, the community in North Dallas, Tex. developed and managed by Erickson Senior Living, the list of on-site amenities grows.

When Lakeview Pointe opened in April 2020, the Custom Interiors team introduced a new showroom on the building’s second floor. Step inside and you’ll find all the resources you need to create the apartment home of your dreams.

Custom Interiors Coordinator Dana Holmes says the past year has been one of the busiest ever, thanks to a confluence of factors. Last year’s opening of Lakeview Pointe and this summer’s scheduled opening of Edgewater Place provides opportunities for incoming residents to personalize their spaces before they move in.

Modern décor

Industry-leading finishes are standard in every new apartment home at Highland Springs, including granite countertops in the kitchen and bath; stainless steel appliances; luxury vinyl plank flooring in the kitchen, entryway, and utility room; tile in the bathrooms; and crown molding in the living area.

To further enhance the space, there’s an extensive list of options for custom upgrades, including paint, flooring, cabinetry, tile, fixtures, and window treatments.

“We have a huge assortment of samples available in our showroom,” says Andréa McCarther, associate executive director. “There’s everything you need to personalize your apartment home.”

Want to add pull-out sliding shelves in the kitchen and an accent tile to the backsplash? Sure. How about a sliding barn door and closet system? No problem.

“Over three-fourths of those who have reserved apartments in Edgewater Place are doing some type of custom work,” says Holmes, noting that the most popular upgrades are upgraded flooring in the living area, carpentry such as additional cabinets, sliding shelves, and built-ins, and the installation of a low-threshold shower.

Desire for personalization

The interest in custom projects at Highland Springs mirrors societal trends, as the surge in the number of hours people spend at home is causing many to evaluate the safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of their nests. A study by Porch.com, an online marketplace connecting homeowners and contractors, found that 55 percent of American homeowners said the past year inspired them to improve their homes.

Custom design duo

At Highland Springs, Holmes is up to the task, bringing a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to her role.

“I’ve worked on remodeling projects that span properties from vacation homes to Texas ranches,” says Holmes, who owned a successful design business for 20 years. “I wore all hats. As I grew in my career, I became interested in designing spaces for seniors that are safe, comfortable, and stylish. The great relationship between the Custom Interiors team and the residents makes it all work seamlessly.”

For those who’ve ever taken on a home improvement project, the process is extensive. Working with a designer, choosing materials, hiring contractors, and monitoring the progress can be time-consuming. Custom Interiors simplifies the experience, leaving the work to the professionals.

“On your first visit with Custom Interiors, we’ll meet in our showroom where we will go over your floor plan, discuss your ideas, and look through samples,” says Holmes. “We’ll pull together a full design plan during this meeting.”

Optional upgrades

That’s when Holmes sets to work. She secures individual proposals for each item on the list of custom upgrades and sends you an itemized quote for your review. At this point, you can make any changes, adding, eliminating, or modifying the scope as you’d like.

“Custom Interiors will not begin work until you have approved the details and the cost of each project, had your questions answered, and are satisfied with each proposal,” says Holmes. “We employ quality contractors, schedule the work, manage the process, and inspect its completion. Throughout the project, we monitor the work, take photos, and relay updates to our customer. We make sure everything is just as you want it to be.”
