Residents at Highland Springs have convenient access to high quality health care on their campus in North Dallas.

Robert "Brit" Carpenter and his wife Kristine first visited Highland Springs, the Erickson Senior Living community in North Dallas, Tex., for his mother.

But after seeing everything the community had to offer, including maintenance-free residences and an array of amenities and activities, the couple decided to make the move themselves--in March 2020, that is, after Brit had recovered from a medical issue.

"I am 99% recovered--no problem. But that really struck a chord with us because my wife had a health issue too," recalls Brit.

Now, with a medical center and continuing care neighborhood right on campus, Brit and Kristine can easily get additional care and support if or when they need it in the future.

"We really value the on-site medical center and the whole continuum of care," he says.

The doctor is in

The medical center, staffed with three full-time physicians, two nurse practitioners, a social worker, and a podiatrist, provides convenient access to high quality, senior-focused care.

Medical Director Dr. Jill Studley, a board-certified specialist in internal and geriatric medicine who previously worked at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Tex., sees patients, as well.

"I met Dr. Studley twenty years ago. I was really impressed with her clinical and administrative skills," Brit says. "So when my primary care physician retired and I found out she'd moved [to Highland Springs], it was easy to ask her to be my primary care physician. I am impressed with the medical team she put together."

"Our focus is on providing top-notch care to our residents," Studley says. "Having a passion for providing good medical care for seniors is only part of what you need to be successful. You must have team members in place who support that vision, and we all do!"

With a focus on prioritizing person-centered care, new patient appointments at the medical center are 60 minutes long, and all subsequent visits last 30 minutes.

"You don't find that in most practices these days," she notes. "It grants us ample time to address each resident's questions and concerns."

Freedom to choose

From in-person appointments to telehealth check-ins and residence visits, residents can request the care that best fits their needs.

And if a resident decides they want to keep their existing primary care provider or specialists, they can do that too--and visit the medical center for flu shots, tests, and screenings.

Brit appreciates having the best of both worlds.

"I see a cardiologist, a nephrologist, and an ophthalmologist, and every single one of them knows Dr. Studley. It's like having a whole medical system within our community," says Brit. "Plus, having my primary care on site, I know everything is in the records and coordinated."

He adds, "It's so nice to have the convenience, when the flu shots and COVID-19 shots come out."

Continuum of care

As a continuing care retirement community, Highland Springs also has a continuing care neighborhood on campus to support residents that benefit from higher levels of care, such as rehabilitation services, assisted living, memory care, and long-term care.

"We have top-notch geriatricians who work side-by-side with nurse practitioners trained in senior adult care as well as so many others who support the needs of residents," Studley says. "We truly provide a continuum of care here."

And with security--trained in emergency response--on call 24/7, residents know they will always have a quick response after medical center hours and on weekends.

These health care teams, from the medical center to the continuing care neighborhood and security, are integrated and communicate often to offer residents the highest quality of care.

Peace of mind

Knowing that he and Kristine are in the best hands at Highland Springs, Brit feels confident in the future.

"What makes it all work here is coordination. We have an on-site CVS, so that whole idea of getting a prescription right away? You don't have to drive everywhere. It's great," Brit says. "The doctors here can just send it over. Or if you want, you can walk it over. And the pharmacist here really takes care of people."

He adds, "Everything here is affirming and comforting!"
