DALLAS, TX---A group of residents from Highland Springs, the Erickson Living retirement community, received statewide honors for a special yearlong charitable project.
They won the 2014 LeadingAge Texas Award for Volunteer Achievement (Group) for their creativity and talent in constructing and decorating cradle sets and toy fire trucks for Dallas-area children during the Christmas season.
The LeadingAge Texas awards program honors those who have made a commitment to the field of aging services, who embody excellence in leadership and advocacy, and who are making outstanding contributions to their communities and our field.
The residents from Highland Springs received their award on Monday, May 19th during the 2014 LeadingAge Texas Annual Meeting and Trade Show at the Renaissance Austin Hotel.
"We are proud of the ingenuity and persistence of these residents who continue to collaborate and build a tradition of giving," stated Matt Neville, Executive Director of Highland Springs. "They truly share their talents to strengthen the surrounding community, and I thank LeadingAge Texas for recognizing our residents and all of this year's honorees."
Since 2010, three resident teams have collaborated annually on the Christmas Project. This grassroots effort provides toy cradle sets and fire trucks to the Hobby Crafters Foundation and the NETWORK of Community Industries, Inc.
The Woodchuck Group designs and constructs the cradles. A group of talented painters then decorate them. The Sewing Ladies are responsible for assembling the dolls and sewing the mattresses and blankets.
With only a brief break after the holidays, their collaboration begins in February, making it a labor of love that extends year-round. In 2013, a total of 115 cradle sets and 50 fire trucks were distributed to brighten the Christmas season for local children in need.
