For Annette West, the decision to move to Highland Springs, the community managed by Erickson Senior Living in North Dallas, was one she approached with a great deal of thought.

“I’m an independent person, and I didn’t want my immediate family, my daughter and son-in-law, to worry about me,” says Annette, who moved to Highland Springs from McKinney, Tex., in June 2014.

Freedom was paramount among Annette’s reasons for moving— freedom from home maintenance, freedom from worry, and freedom to pursue activities of interest to her. For Annette, that means filling her calendar with meaningful pursuits. She continues to work part-time as an early childhood educator for the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She also plays in two canasta groups, is active in her church, attends performances of the Plano Symphony Orchestra, and enjoys dinner out with friends.

“The convenience and value of the Highland Springs lifestyle is tremendous,” says Resident Services Manager Kimberly Reed. “When someone moves to the community, there’s an immediate impact on their day-to-day quality of life. They can essentially live maintenance-free, while also enjoying the flexibility to focus on activities that enhance their quality of life.”

Activities and amenities for every interest

Annette first learned of Highland Springs from a friend whose parents moved to Eagle’s Trace, the Erickson Senior Living community in West Houston.

“I had the opportunity to visit with my friend’s parents on two different occasions,” says Annette. “I learned that another Erickson community, Highland Springs, would be opening in Dallas. The location of Highland Springs was appealing, about two miles from where I used to live in Richardson and three miles from my daughter and son-in-law.”

The more Annette learned about the lifestyle offered at Highland Springs, the more she felt convinced it was the right move for her.

“You can get what you want, and it is your decision,” she says. “I like the fact I can pick and choose what I want to do.”

Highland Springs offers more than 100 resident-led clubs and activities, everything from bocce ball and exercise classes to mahjongg and art classes.

“The number of resident-led groups, committees, and activities is a win-win all the way around,” says Reed. “Our residents can engage in interactive programming and enjoy all the social benefits that come with making new friends and becoming part of these groups. As a resident life team, we’re intentional about making sure there is something for everyone. When residents focus on activities that motivate and interest them, they feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment.”

Worry-free senior living

Freedom from the chores associated with owning a house are another key benefit of the Highland Springs lifestyle. All apartments at the North Dallas community are single-story, eliminating the need for stairs and facilitating independence.

“If something goes wrong or breaks in my apartment, I just call the front desk and it is taken care of, even replacing light bulbs or reconnecting the dryer hose,” says Annette. Removing the stresses and expenses that come with maintaining a home give way to a sense of freedom from anxiety.

“There’s an emotional, mental, and physical relief that happens when people choose to move to Highland Springs,” says Reed. “They know they’ve put themselves in a good position for the future.”

The worry-free lifestyle carries many perks. For Annette, one of the biggest is the flexible meal options and on-site dining options. “Inviting friends to dinner and not having to cook makes for a very enjoyable evening for the hostess,” she says.

A hallway “family”

The sense of community is another benefit. “The seven apartments on my fourth-floor hallway wing have become my hallway family,” says Annette. “We gather once a month just to talk and catch up on what is going on with everyone. Even with my part-time work, which involves overnight travel, my neighbors keep tabs on me and keep me up to date on all information. We didn’t know each other before moving in, but we made the effort to get to know each other and we have made Highland Springs our safe, happy, forever home.”
