Oak Crest's Bob McKeever Wins Erickson Senior Living's Nature Photo Contest

October 16, 2012

PARKVILLE, MD---With an eye for nature and a knack for capturing the moment, Bob McKeever, a resident of Oak Crest retirement community, earned recognition from photography enthusiasts across the country.   Mr. McKeever was the grand prize winner in the Erickson Living "Nature" Photo Contest for an entry entitled "A Reflection of Nature's Intimacy."  With seventy-eight entries, the contest was open to all and promoted on the Erickson Living Facebook page.   Utilizing his Canon Powershot 5 IS, Mr. McKeever recalls how he came to photograph the winning entry, a dazzling scene of a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly on a lily blossom.   "It was taken at a fellow resident's rose garden area at Oak Crest," described Mr. McKeever.  "She also has four special kinds of lily plants, and a couple of Tiger Swallowtails were 'flitting' above the blooms.  One of them landed on one of  the blooms, and I quickly adjusted the camera to speed mode to capture what I later called 'A Reflection of Nature's Intimacy' for the contest."   Dabbling in photography during family vacations, Mr. McKeever's interest in photography grew when moving to the Parkville-based retirement community in 2004.  Utilizing his digital camera and photo printer, he takes photos of scenes on the 87-acre campus and throughout Baltimore County.   You will also find Mr. McKeever at a soccer field or basketball court, following the athletic exploits of four of his six grandchildren in Maryland.  "Photography has also allowed me to be more involved in their lives.  They play many sports so capturing their action shots and sharing them is very rewarding."     While he considers himself as a beginner, technology accelerated his interest in photography.  "Digital cameras and the editing techniques enhanced my enjoyment of the hobby," explained Mr. McKeever.  "As opposed to shipping the proofs to someone else to develop, I am now the producer and director of the end product."   Mr. McKeever will be displaying some of his photographs at the 2nd Annual Tech Expo to be held at Oak Crest on November 13th.   "I am appreciative of all friends and family who took the time to vote for me in the Erickson Living Nature Photo Contest," stated Mr. McKeever.  "It was a true collective effort powered by the internet."
