Your Retirement, Your Way
What’s most important to you when researching a move to senior living?
Many people want to be part of a vibrant community surrounded by beautiful outdoor spaces. Others search for comprehensive wellness and fitness programs. For some retirees, it’s all about finding the perfect floor plan for their lifestyle.
No matter what you’re looking for, Erickson Senior Living communities truly offer something for everyone.
When Jeannie and Moe Trail moved from their peaceful, 80-acre farm to a home at Wind Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Highlands Ranch, Colo., they thought they were in for a change of scenery.
To their pleasant surprise, the serenity of their day-to-day life hasn’t changed all that much.
Jeannie says, “On our farm, we were used to a lot of space. Walking around here gives us the chance to access that amount of land again. There are sidewalks and gardens and ponds where we can watch the wildlife all over campus.”
When they’re not strolling along the 85-acre campus, the Trails are probably tending to their plot in the community garden, dining al fresco at on-site restaurants, or attending the annual summer concert series at the outdoor amphitheater.
Moving to Wind Crest has given the Trails opportunities to explore new pursuits as well. Moe says they are interested in giving biking a try. “The only thing I don’t have here that I used to have is a horse. It wouldn’t fit in the living room!” says Moe, with a laugh.
When Kay Hawkins was considering her senior living options, she had a list of priorities. Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va., checked all the boxes.
“I like to wake up with the sun,” she says, “so I told the sales crew that I wanted an apartment that faced east, and I got one.”
She also wanted a community with a range of health care services on site because her late husband, Mick, had dementia. As a continuing care retirement community, Greenspring offers assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation services, and more.
When they moved to Greenspring, Kay settled into an independent living home, and Mick moved to Garden Ridge, Greenspring’s continuing care community just a short walk away.
When Mick died two years ago, Kay says the Greenspring community made a big difference in helping her through that tough time.
Now, she teaches yoga to fellow residents several times a week and enjoys a healthy diet and exercise routine—supported by Greenspring’s on-site restaurants and fitness center.
She has also discovered new interests since moving to the community, like line dancing and sing-alongs. “I love it,” she says. “I never realized how much I would enjoy these activities.”
“All my life, I’ve been working on getting fit, so I decided that retirement was really going to be about me,” says Cindy Byrkeland, who moved to Avery Point, an Erickson Senior Living community in Short Pump, Va., with her wife, Madonna, about three years ago.
With a variety of exercise classes and an expansive on-site fitness center, staffed by trained professionals, Cindy was in the right place to focus on fitness.
“I decided that I was going to try every single fitness class to figure out which ones I like,” she continues. “But I didn’t anticipate that I would like them all! Now, I start my day with weight training or cardio. I also try to do yoga every day. I love the boxing classes. And I teach a line dancing class as well.”
Cindy says she and Madonna are thrilled to be a part of such a vibrant, engaged, and supportive community.
“Someone once asked me what my least favorite thing about living here is,” says Cindy.
“I thought about it, and my answer was, ‘I hate it when four activities are going on at the same time, and I want to do all four.’ There are too many choices!”
For Susan and Joe Sims, making the decision to move to Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., was easy.
Deciding on a floor plan for their new home, however, required some consideration.
“We really wanted to find the right setting for us and our lifestyle,” says Susan. “I like to cook, and Joe likes to entertain, so a dedicated dining room was really important to us.”
The couple chose the spacious Wycliff floor plan, which features a den, balcony, and ample space for their dining room furniture.
“We really did luck into a great apartment that was just what we wanted,” says Joe.
“The apartment, the setting, and all the amenities we enjoy here are terrific, but if it were not for the friendly residents, it would not be the same,” adds Susan. “They make it so nice.”
