Vibrant Outdoor Spaces Promote Social Connections

A walk along a picturesque, landscaped trail. A spirited game of bocce with friends. An al fresco dinner with neighbors on a summer evening.
These are just a few of the ways that residents at Erickson Senior Living communities enjoy the beauty of the outdoors in a secure, peaceful environment.
We recently spoke with Sarah Kokinos, vice president of community living for Erickson Senior Living, to learn how outdoor activities and amenities help residents stay active and connected while improving their health and well-being.
A: Studies show that spending time outside supports physical fitness, mental health, and overall well-being, the foundation for Erickson Senior Living's Embrace Well-Being program. The importance of the great outdoors is integrated into the program's three key areas:
My Mind references the positive effects that time spent in nature has on one's mood and perceptions. My Body recognizes the physical benefits of fresh-air routines, like walking, biking, or playing games and sports. Lastly, My Connections are supported through plentiful outdoor spaces, which provide opportunities to engage with neighbors, family members, and friends.
A: Our communities have so much to offer as we continually reinvest in campuses based on resident feedback. Residents appreciate the vast acres of outdoor space that are filled with amenities and gathering spaces.
Walking trails have always been a favorite at Erickson Senior Living communities. On any given day, you'll find residents strolling along professionally maintained paths.
Residents appreciate the continuous enhancement of existing amenities as well as the addition of popular new features throughout our national network of communities. Based on what residents are asking for, we have added new pickleball and bocce courts in recent years, as well as dog parks, putting greens, and more.
Several communities have incorporated beautiful meditation gardens, which offer a quiet spot for reflection and an opportunity to relax in a peaceful environment. Patios, firepits, and other areas are terrific gathering places for residents to come together, enjoy refreshments, and socialize with friends.
Our communities are professionally designed and maintained, creating picture-perfect, scenic landscapes for resident photographers, painters, and other artists. Many Erickson Senior Living campuses have ponds, as well as gardens where residents can grow flowers and vegetables and keep an eye out for native butterflies and birds.
A: As we are learning with a new generation of residents, outdoor space adds a dynamic element to everyday life, offering plenty of opportunities for entertainment and social activities at our communities.
Our outdoor amenities are designed to inspire connections. For example, our dog parks offer space for canine companions to play while their owners sit and chat. And, whether it's just for fun or in friendly competition, residents come together to participate in morning putting challenges, afternoon pickleball sessions, and after-dinner bocce games.
When family members come to visit, it's such a delight to dine at outdoor tables, walk around campus, or just sit and take in the stunning scenery.
There's truly something for everyone in the great outdoors!
A: Our goal will always be to listen to residents and work to make their lives better. That's our mission, and that's why we are always asking questions that matter like how your community can enhance your daily life. Because of this innovative spirit, residents can enjoy their friends, take advantage of a variety of activities, and improve their health and well-being.
