Community members at Devonshire, an Erickson Senior Living community at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., have convenient access to industry-leading amenities that are designed to enhance their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

With a fitness center, newly renovated swimming pool, resurfaced putting green, full-sized croquet court, meditation room, golf simulator, and healthy dining options at on-site restaurants, there's no shortage of ways for these retirees to meet their wellness goals!

"We've really enjoyed life at Devonshire since day one," says Faith Spitz, who moved to the engaging community with her husband Harvey last spring. "Our goal is to take advantage of anything and everything that interests us. From exercise and sport groups to music, art, and entertainment, there is so much to choose from that will benefit our well-being."

Fitness for all

Like the Spitzes, 88% of Baby Boomers consider living in a community with amenities, activities, services, and social opportunities right outside their door to be a top-tier benefit--according to a recent Edge Research study conducted in partnership with Erickson Senior Living.

"Because everything--including the fitness center--is just a short, indoor stroll away, it's easier for community members to maintain a heathy routine," says Fitness Specialist Remy Harwood.

The fitness center, boasting state-of-the-art equipment, is at the heart of Devonshire's on-site wellness offerings. Here, Harwood works one-on-one with community members to develop workout plans that are unique to each person's abilities and goals.

"It's my goal to help community members embrace personal wellness and independence to achieve optimal physical and mental health," says Harwood.

Faith, who participates in balance, stretch, weightlifting, and Zumba classes, credits Harwood for the amazing progress that she and her neighbors have made.

"Remy is a wonderful, caring, thoughtful person," says Faith. "She knows and understands everybody's needs, which helps prevent injury."

Socialization matters

Like Faith, Harvey enjoys a variety of physical fitness activities, including pickleball and golf.

"He's a great athlete who's very involved at the indoor pickleball court. He also goes to the fitness center and uses the exercise machines. He never did that before moving to Devonshire!" notes Faith. "He also writes a monthly trivia column for the Devonshire Chronicle."

Together, the couple has attended Florida Atlantic University (FAU) lectures on campus and formed a popular painting club--both of which have contributed to their positive engagement.

"Prior to our move, we belonged to a painting club and loved it," says Faith. "When we moved to Devonshire, we asked about a club for painters--especially those who like to paint with others. Although a club did not yet exist, the staff were wonderful in helping us get one started. They asked us what we needed, providing a room with a sink to clean brushes. All set and ready to go, we sent out flyers and spread the word."

Now, the painting club meets every Thursday afternoon and is open to all community members.

"It's a really nice group," says Faith. "We encourage and help one another. If we see something that could be added or improved, we feel comfortable sharing our opinion. The group has helped me tremendously."

Further supporting the couple's endeavor, Devonshire staff members suggested creating a display wall in the clubhouse to showcase the work of community artists.

"We develop strong relationships with community members because we want to see them live their best lives," says Harwood.

Peace of mind

When they're not busy working out in the fitness center or planning the next painting club meeting, you'll find Faith and Harvey walking around campus--taking in the gorgeous scenery and appreciating the world of wellness that's at their fingertips.

"We walk a lot," says Faith, with a laugh. "It's a great way to exercise. There are beautiful paths that we enjoy exploring!"

She continues, "Our sons are so happy about our decision to move to Devonshire. When we moved, we told them, 'This is your opportunity to do your things now too. There's no need to worry about us.'"

While physical fitness is quite important to the couple, nothing beats the peace of mind that enhances their mental health.

"We recently visited Chatsworth, Devonshire's continuing care neighborhood. It's lovely," explains Faith. "We hope that we will never need that level of care, but we are happy, knowing it's there. We consider ourselves so very lucky."
