For residents and staff members alike at Avery Point, the Erickson Senior Living community in Richmond, Va., 2024 is characterized by growth and opportunity.

"The community recently celebrated its first anniversary, which is hard to believe! Time really flies," says Executive Director Todd DeLaney. "Everyone is looking forward to the continued growth of Avery Point and its amenities."

Expansion plans are already underway on the 94-acre campus. By this spring, two more residence buildings will open, granting 300 additional retirees a maintenance-free, active lifestyle.

Judy Shepherd, who jumped at the chance to be one of Avery Point's first residents, sees the community's growth as a new beginning.

"I'm going to expand my horizons a bit and get involved in a couple of card games that I never tried before," she says. "I also plan on starting a biking club and volunteering in the local community to do something to help other people."

With worry-free apartment homes that create more time for pursuing hobbies, it's no wonder why new residents--and current ones like Judy--are going to be booked and busy in 2024.

Time to socialize

Judy loved her townhome in South Hill, Va., but she was looking for more socialization and opportunities to explore her interests.

While searching for a senior living community with a swimming pool, she learned about Avery Point--and its 25-meter, heated saltwater indoor pool; fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment; and a wide array of classes, clubs, and groups that were already thriving at the young community.

"There was so much going on and all the activities were avenues for social interaction," she recalls. "It's just what I wanted!"

Since moving into her two-bedroom, two-bath apartment home with a balcony in April 2023, Judy has become a frequent visitor at the indoor pool and fitness center, swimming half a mile nearly every day and participating in cardio drumming and strength training classes several times a week.

Judy has also joined two resident book clubs, history club programs, and weekly movie nights.

Active and engaged

Like Judy, Ellen Brothers was looking for an engaging community to help her make the most of her retirement years.

A resident of Richmond, Va., for 30 years, Ellen researched several retirement communities in the area--but nothing topped Avery Point.

"As a brand-new community, everything was fresh and clean. That really appealed to me," says Ellen, who moved into her apartment home in July.

Now that she's settled in, she's come to appreciate the top-notch amenities just as much as the community's attractive appearance.

"I take advantage of the swimming pool and fitness center. I exercise for two reasons. First, I enjoy the socialization, and second, I want to burn the calories I consume by eating delicious meals prepared by the community's creative chefs," she jokes.

More on the horizon

This year, Ellen and her fellow foodies are in luck. Besides the new residence buildings, the community will soon open its third restaurant, The Fireside, featuring a private dining room and outdoor terrace seating.

2024 will also bring new amenities like a creative arts studio, game room, library reading room, woodshop, and an outdoor pickleball court--giving residents even more opportunities to enjoy their favorite hobbies, share their talents, and connect with others.

"By investing over $500 million in upgrades and renovations to its existing communities across the country, Erickson Senior Living will continue to provide thousands of seniors with the amenities and services they need to enjoy a fulfilling retirement," notes DeLaney.

"Choosing an Erickson Senior Living community was a big consideration for me," Ellen notes. "It feels good to be somewhere with the support of a successful company behind it."

'Wonderful atmosphere'

Excited to welcome new faces to Avery Point, Judy and Ellen reflect on what they love most about the community: friendship.

"The staff and the residents are all so friendly," says Ellen. "It's just a wonderful atmosphere, and it's very easy to make friends."

DeLaney adds, "It's about creating an environment where people have a sense of belonging and can develop strong, supportive relationships. Without the stress and hassles of maintenance, residents can focus on enjoying the community with their neighbors. And with so much on the horizon, Avery Point's future is looking very bright."
