Out and about at Woodleigh Chase

June 12, 2024

No matter the month of the year, Erickson Senior Living communities--just like Woodleigh Chase in Fairfax, Va.--are always abuzz with activity, thanks to the climate-controlled walkways that make it easy for residents to get from fitness classes to club meetings indoors.

But during the summer, Erickson Senior Living communities come to life as walkers, gardeners, and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy even more meaningful experiences and social activities in beautiful spaces woven throughout each campus.

"Having the ability to stay active and socially engaged, regardless of the weather, is a huge advantage to residents at Woodleigh Chase. Our weatherproof design allows everyone to go about their lives when the weather isn't ideal," says Sales Director David Taylor. "And when the weather is nice, our outdoor spaces offer an entire new range of opportunities."

Designed with nature in mind

Every apartment home at Woodleigh Chase features a screened balcony or patio where you can watch the birds over a cup of coffee or wind down at the end of the day with a cold beverage.

Cathie Craighill's large, screened patio is one of her favorite features about her new home.

"My porch is huge--over 200 square feet! It's like an extension of my apartment home. I love sitting out there, taking in the scenery and people-watching," says Cathie.

The landscaping at Woodleigh Chase was carefully designed to preserve the natural surroundings of the park-like campus.

"I'm a walker, so I like how walkable campus is," says Cathie. "And whenever I have friends visiting, they always comment on how many outdoor spaces there are on campus and things to do around here."

Good news for green thumbs

When Cathy Tunis moved to Woodleigh Chase, she was happy to discover that she wouldn't have to give up her love of gardening.

"When I was growing up, we had a huge vegetable garden. We grew everything from corn and tomatoes to asparagus, strawberries, and rhubarb. Later, when my husband Harry and I moved to Reston, Va., we had a vegetable garden for 46 years," says Cathy, a longtime member of the Reston Garden Club.

Now, as the leader of the community's new garden club, she oversees 15 raised garden beds where she and her neighbors can plant everything from flowers to herbs.

"I'm looking forward to working with the other garden club members to plan what we will grow next year," notes Cathy.

Like Cathie, the Tunises love that they can enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of their apartment home.

"We are on the fifth floor and have a southeast exposure," she says. "It's nice and sunny, so I can have my potted plants and grow some herbs."

Right outside your door

"We have so many options for residents to enjoy the outdoors," says Tyler Kypers, associate executive director of Woodleigh Chase. "Our pickleball courts are very popular and we have an outdoor fireplace where residents gather in the evenings."

Kypers also notes that Woodleigh Chase's convenient setting.  "When you are here on campus, it's easy to forget that you're just a few miles away from the area's best shopping, dining, golf courses, parks, and outdoor recreation," he says. "It's also important to note that making our residents feel secure is a top priority. We are a gated community with 24/7 security, so you never have to worry about coming home after dark or taking your dog out for a late-night walk."

Best of all, Woodleigh Chase residents enjoy their beautiful apartment homes and outdoor amenities without any of the hassles of homeownership like mowing the grass, mulching the garden, or power washing the siding and deck. "It's true maintenance-free living!" says Taylor.
