After 40 years in a single-family house in Oceanport, N.J., Ann and Bob Herberg decided it was time to move somewhere that would support a vibrant and healthy lifestyle--preferably without having to climb so many stairs.
So, it should come as no surprise that the Herbergs were happy to find one-level residences and an array of activities at Seabrook, an Erickson Senior Living community in Tinton Falls, N.J.
They were also pleased to discover that Seabrook, a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), has an on-campus medical center and continuing care neighborhood, making health care easy and convenient.
Building relationships
The medical center is led by Medical Director Dr. Alexandra Kovaleva. As a specialist in senior health care, Kovaleva ensures that she and her team deliver high quality health care services for all residents.
When retirees move to Seabrook, they have the option of maintaining existing relationships with their providers or utilizing the community's medical team for their care. Most residents choose to use the medical center for primary care, building long-term relationships with the providers who know them by name and happily greet them around campus.
When Ann and Bob moved to Seabrook four years ago, they had their own primary doctor. "But when he retired, we switched to Dr. Kovaleva," Ann explains. "She is wonderful and very compassionate. She writes instructions out for me and makes sure I understand. When I had an infection, she called the next day to check on me."
Building relationships are what Kovaleva enjoys most. "We know the residents very well and know what's going on medically and psychologically," she says. "We notice the subtle changes that someone just randomly assigned wouldn't see."
Kovaleva also appreciates the focus on overall well-being at Seabook. "We know about the other resources available to residents in the community. There might be a new class at the pool that would be great for them or a new group that would match their interests and benefit them socially," she says.
Ann appreciates having a relationship with the on-site providers. "Dr. K. [Kovaleva] checks to make sure I've had my vaccinations, mammogram, colonoscopy, and all of the other annual tests that I need," Ann says. "And the staff personally calls with test results and appointment reminders."
Convenience matters
Getting an appointment at Seabrook's medical center is easy, Ann adds. Just a quick call or online request is all that's needed.
"If you need an appointment the same day, they will find a way of getting you in," Ann says. "You don't find that in many doctors' offices."
If a resident is ill and needs assistance, on-site security team members will provide transportation to the medical center. Trained in emergency response, they also assist residents after hours and have a direct line to on-call medical center providers.
Convenient services
Board-certified internists, a podiatrist, and a nurse practitioner--along with Dr. Kovaleva--are on-site full time. Seabrook also brings in specialists like cardiologists, urologists, nephrologists, and orthopedists, so residents don't need to leave the community for appointments.
Seabrook offers other essential medical services, like therapeutic injections, vaccinations, and lab tests, completed in the on-campus lab with a phlebotomist. State-of-the-art equipment enables technicians to perform EKGs and other tests, and the results are reviewed by the medical center team and local specialists, if needed.
In addition, the on-site CVS Pharmacy® provides prescriptions within 30 minutes and can even deliver right to residents' doors.
Should a resident's health care needs ever change, the continuing care neighborhood offers additional support, including assisted living, subacute rehab care, and skilled nursing care. Caregivers across Seabrook communicate regularly with medical center staff members, providing seamless care.
Above and beyond
With so many health and well-being resources, Ann and Bob have peace of mind for the future.
"Thanks to our fully equipped medical center, staffed by dedicated professionals who build relationships with residents, our care goes beyond what other retirement communities--and even other CCRCs--offer," says Executive Director Jen McNamara.
