Since moving to Riderwood, an Erickson Senior Living community in Silver Spring, Md., from her single-family house in Washington, D.C., Alice Greene couldn’t be happier with her large one-bedroom, one-bath apartment home.
“Because I was moving to Riderwood by myself, I felt confident that a one-bedroom apartment home would best meet my needs,” she recalls. “I really like the Brighton because it offers the perfect amount of space for me.”
Boasting extra-wide picture windows, a walk-in closet, an extra-large living area, and a spacious kitchen equipped with stainless steel appliances, the Brighton is the most sought-after one-bedroom floor plan at Riderwood.
The perfect match
Many prospective residents appreciate that the Brighton offers such a big bang for their buck.
“People want to make financially sound decisions for their future. No one wants the burden of a home that is more than they can afford,” says Sales Director Josh Runkles.
“That is why prospective residents are evaluating their needs and determining if a one-bedroom apartment home is a good fit.”
Alice agrees. “It doesn’t make sense to pay for, or live in, more space than I need,” she says. “Everything I need is right here in this lovely home!”
Living on the fourth floor of her residence building, she has lovely views from her extra-wide picture windows. “I enjoy seeing the many beautiful trees right outside the window,” says Alice.
She was impressed by the ample storage and convenient washer and dryer as well. “The closets are a nice size, holding all of my clothes and shoes. I also appreciate the washer and dryer inside the bedroom. It makes doing laundry so easy,” she notes.
Unbeatable amenities
Before moving to Riderwood in 2022, Alice carefully considered several retirement living options.
“I visited a number of communities before arriving at Riderwood, which I found to be the most interesting and appealing community. Not only is it a large campus filled with a variety of people, but I can walk all over campus without going outside,” she notes, pointing to the climate-controlled walkways.
She was also drawn to Riderwood’s unbeatable amenities, including a state-of-the-art wellness center, three satellite fitness centers, beautiful walking paths and trails, an on-site medical center, theater, classrooms, two beauty salons, and two banks—and especially the community’s seven restaurants.
A ‘perfect’ kitchen
“I don’t do a lot of cooking, so I didn’t need a really large kitchen. The Brighton kitchen is perfect and filled with very nice appliances, should I want to cook dinner,” she explains. “However, I often prefer to go to one of Riderwood’s restaurants. The food is very good! And it’s a fun way to dine with different groups of people.”
Each restaurant features rotating menus and meals cooked to order with fresh ingredients by culinary professionals.
Activities abound
Alice was also blown away by Riderwood’s long list of more than 250 resident-run clubs and activities, providing a wealth of opportunities to meet like-minded neighbors and make friends.
“Riderwood is filled with vibrant and active people, and there are so many activities to enjoy!” she says. “I play pickleball, exercise in the fitness center, and swim in the pool—and everything is just steps away from where I live.”
She continues, “At Riderwood, there is always something interesting and fun to do. If something excites me, I walk over and participate, usually with a friend who wants to go. I’ve attended presentations from local political candidates, watched movies, taken exercise classes, and even danced. I really enjoy exploring the activities created by many of the residents.”
An American Baptist minister, Alice also volunteers with Riderwood’s Friday afternoon worship service.
“I just love helping out with things that are important to me,” she says. “Riderwood’s worship services make it easy for me to want to be involved.”
The gift of friendship
With so many amenities and activities just a short stroll from her Brighton apartment home, Alice’s circle of friends continues to grow.
“One of the best, most unexpected gifts of moving to Riderwood are the friends I have made,” she says. “When you start doing the things you enjoy, you meet people, they become friends, and you continue to do things together. I’m living my life surrounded by others in ways that I didn’t have when living in my former house.”
She adds, “Yet, I still have my own private, beautiful apartment when I choose to be by myself. I am very happy here at Riderwood!”
