Lydia Mosher Shares Why She Loves Her One-Bedroom Residence at Riderwood

This month marks the one-year anniversary of Lydia Mosher's move to Riderwood, an Erickson Senior Living community in Silver Spring, Md., and she's as happy as ever.
"I absolutely love my apartment home! It is just beautiful," says Lydia of her extra large, one-bedroom with den Georgetown floor plan, which she selected after months of consideration.
Comparing options
"It was my evening reading almost every night," she recalls, with a laugh. "I found the price of the Georgetown to be more attractive than that of the two bedrooms. And, with one bedroom and a den, the bedroom is bigger than most two-bedroom styles."
Josh Runkles, Riderwood's sales director, notes that Lydia is not alone in her praise for the Georgetown's large, open floor plan.
"The Georgetown is one of our most popular residences," he says. "The extra-large living area and flexible den are perfect for creating a unique living space, while removing the burdens of home upkeep and maintenance."
Unexpected opportunity
Lydia's journey to Riderwood began when she was asked if she wanted to attend an information session on campus with a fellow church member. She agreed.
"At the time, I wasn't looking for myself, but I was very impressed," she recalls. "I decided to come back again with friends for a special event where I joined the Priority List."
She adds, "My house was becoming increasingly burdensome, and I was beginning to feel unsteady on the stairs to my basement," noting that Riderwood's maintenance-free, one-level residences were appealing.
As a Priority List member, Lydia attended several events to learn more about the community's worry-free lifestyle, dozens of clubs, amenities, and health care services.
"I also made friends with other Priority List members," Lydia says. "Very quickly, Riderwood sounded more and more attractive."
The perfect layout
With her decision to move to Riderwood made, Lydia began considering her floor plan options.
"I was attracted to the Georgetown because the den, with a daybed, was the perfect place to host my granddaughter. It was also big enough to serve as my art studio," she explains. "The layout of the room worked well with my antique filing cabinets and large bookcases as well."
The Georgetown's extra large living area and two oversized windows, providing lots of natural light, were draws as well.
Lydia then toured three different locations of the floor plan before reserving her new home.
"I knew I wanted a Georgetown on a higher floor; I wanted to be able to see trees outside my window," she says. "When I looked out the window and saw a beautiful River Birch tree, I knew this was the one."
Home sweet home
While preparing for her move, Lydia opted to work with a real estate agent and moving company recommended by Riderwood.
"Everyone was so helpful," says Lydia. "I was amazed at how well it all came together."
She continues, "For instance, my bookcases are about the size of three or four standard bookcases put together, and they are packed with books. The movers not only moved them all carefully, they unpacked them, placing them exactly where they had been in my house. I can be persnickety about where things go, so I was amazed that they were each placed exactly as they had been."
When she's not enjoying the lush views from her residence, Lydia is out and about exploring hobbies and meeting new people.
"I joined the Adventurers in Art group and now serve on their planning committee," she says. "I also joined the African American history club, and I usher JAM [Just All Music] concerts. I'm definitely busy!"
Lydia also appreciates the scenic views she discovers during her walks around campus.
"There are all these lovely places to walk," she says. "The other day, I was walking around a pond, and a blue heron landed on the water. My husband and I had a special relationship with the blue heron--when we visited the Adirondacks to canoe and kayak, we always enjoyed following the blue heron across the water. That's really special."
