For the Love of the Game: Riderwood Residents Win Softball Tournament

June 6, 2013

SILVER SPRING, MD---On a picture-perfect late spring day, residents of Riderwood retirement community brought home the trophy in the Annual Erickson Living Resident Softball Tournament.
Team Riderwood earned a pair of hard-fought victories against sister Erickson Living retirement communities in a day of competitive, yet friendly, competition.  The four team event, a "Battle of the Beltways," matched squads from Baltimore (Charlestown and Oak Crest) and the DC Metro area (Greenspring and Riderwood).  The tournament was held at the Fairfield Athletics and Aquatics Center in Laurel, MD.
Riderwood defeated Charlestown 12-0 in the opening game as resident Gordon Ward threw a no-hitter.
In the championship game versus Greenspring, Riderwood scored five runs in the 4th inning to break open a tie game.  With some "web gems" in the final inning, Riderwood held on to earn an 11-6 victory.

"We worked hard, practiced as a team and everyone made a contribution, especially Gordon with the no-hitter in the first game," described Riderwood resident Charles Hudson, who served as a coach.
Team Riderwood received vocal support from residents, friends and family members who made the trip to Laurel.
