Whether sampling a spoonful of ice cream or test-driving the latest SUV, trying something firsthand is the best way to know if it's a good fit for you. Choosing a senior living community shouldn't be any different!

Visiting retirement communities, evaluating the amenities and activities they offer, and considering the overall value can help you make a well-informed decision.

At Maris Grove, an Erickson Senior Living community in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania, you can take your research one step further by experiencing the active lifestyle you're considering.

The inside scoop

Diane and Tim Boyle did just that when they spent a night at Maris Grove through Live the Life, an exclusive program for those on the community's Priority List.

"By staying overnight, you get to truly experience what life here would be like," says Sales Associate Julia Amadio, who takes great care in customizing each stay to be both enjoyable and informative.

"It's a wonderful way to meet potential neighbors; get acquainted with the community; enjoy complimentary dining; and explore the various activities, events, and clubs we offer."

And there's no need to bring anything beyond personal items and a change of clothes. The fully furnished Live the Life suites are stocked with everything you might need.

During your visit, you'll be matched with a resident or residents who share your interests or hobbies.

"They'll guide you through the community, pointing out places you might like. You'll also join them for lunch or dinner," says Amadio.

Affirming experience

Diane and Tim called their Live the Life experience a great success, as it provided a more in-depth look at the community--ultimately confirming their decision to move in.

"We learned that Maris Grove is a community we could live in and enjoy aging in," says Tim.

During their overnight visit, the couple stayed in a Brighton, a one-bedroom, one-bath residence.

"It was well decorated," says Diane.

Tim adds, "The residence building we stayed in sits on a hill with some great views, so we learned where we wanted to be situated on campus."

They also gleaned that they would prefer a larger residence to call their own. Following their stay, Diane and Tim reserved a two-bedroom, two-bath floor plan that includes a sunroom, laundry room, dining room, and living room with a bump-out--to enjoy the view.

Their first day at Maris Grove, Diane and Tim made it a priority to explore the vibrant community indoors.

"We got to see a lot of the activities and walk the halls on our own," Tim adds.

As Amadio noted, the Boyles also had the opportunity to dine with current residents.

"The couple took us to dinner, and then we went to see their apartment. They talked about their move, how they adapted, and how they downsized," Diane recalls.

On their second day, they enjoyed coffee and breakfast at Coeburn Cafe before strolling around the community, inside and out.

"The amenities were great," says Diane.

"We got to see all the different areas of the campus in a casual, relaxed environment--walking to the pond, visiting the gym, observing activities," Tim says. "There was no pressure at all. It was more affirming that this was something that we wanted to do."

Opportunity to explore

Diane and Tim were already familiar with the Glen Mills area, having moved from Devon, Pa. However, Amadio mentions that many Live the Life guests come from out of state.

"Some people who retired to Florida decide they'd prefer to be closer to their children and grandchildren in Pennsylvania," she explains. "For those visiting from out of town, our Live the Life program can be especially helpful."

Beyond learning about Maris Grove, some guests also take the opportunity to explore the local area, from the historic charm of Chadds Ford to the beauty of Longwood Gardens, Winterthur Museum, and the wineries of the Brandywine Valley.

Active and engaged

Since their move to Maris Grove in October 2023, the Boyles have filled their calendar with activities. They play water volleyball, mah-jongg, nine-hole golf, and are members of book and movie clubs. Diane joined a clay club, and they are on the Resident Advisory Council's health and wellness committee.

Diane, loving their active lifestyle, wishes she could participate in even more activities. "But there's just not enough hours in the day!" she says.

Reflecting on their Live the Life experience, the Boyles agree that it sealed the deal--and they couldn't be happier.

"We encourage people to get on the Priority List, because there is no downside," says Tim.
