When prospective residents begin exploring senior living options, they are especially impressed by the on-site medical center staffed by dedicated full-time physicians at Maris Grove, an Erickson Senior Living community in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania.

Medical Director Dr. Kenneth Chang, Dr. Lisa Jones, Dr. Anuj Prasad, and Nurse Practitioner Stacey Eadie all focus specifically on senior health care--identifying and managing conditions more prevalent in older adults and analyzing other chronic conditions to provide appropriate treatment.
Many Maris Grove residents use one of the medical center's full-time staff members as their primary care provider, notes Executive Director Maureen Heckler.
"And if their provider is on vacation, there is always a physician on call 24/7," says Heckler. "Our physicians can access patients' medical records to know how they've been treated in the past. This helps them provide better continuous care."
Residents who choose to continue seeing their existing doctors can still utilize the medical center for vaccinations and lab work as needed.
Building relationships
In-person visits and telehealth appointments offered by the medical center make it especially convenient for residents to get the care they need.
"If someone is feeling under the weather, they might use telehealth rather than coming to the medical center," says Heckler.
For residents who do visit in person, they don't have to go far. The medical center is located on campus in Brinton Clubhouse, just a short, indoor stroll away from every residence.
The medical center offers impressive appointment duration times as well. New patient visits are up to an hour long, and all follow-up appointments are 30 minutes--as opposed to the standard 10-15 minutes.
"Being able to establish a relationship with our residents is such a key piece of providing high quality health care," Heckler says. "During a 30-minute appointment, the provider is able to dive in and see what's really going on. Having that dedicated time, knowing the residents, and seeing them on a routine basis establishes trust."
Continuum of care
Should the health care needs of a resident change, additional levels of care--skilled nursing, assisted living, long-term care, and memory care services--are available right on campus in the continuing care neighborhood.
Maris Grove's health care teams--from the medical center to the continuing care neighborhood--are integrated to offer residents seamless care.
Heckler explains that the medical center staff is able to follow residents as they age in place.
"If they need more support, they can have a short-term stay in a rehabilitation program. Their physician, who has been seeing them all along, is going to continue to treat them there because it's all on site," she says.
"If a resident moves into long-term care or memory care, their primary physician is going to communicate with the specialist in that department. Our residents really benefit from our continuum of care."
