Fox Run residents remain safe and connected during pandemic

Rosie and Jon Blum moved into their custom-designed apartment home at Fox Run, a senior living community managed by Erickson Living in Novi, Mich., just a few short months before the coronavirus pandemic escalated.

"We moved here because of the friendly residents and staff, the upbeat atmosphere, and the number of different activities," says Jon, a retired dermatologist. "We love living here."

But the pandemic changed everything as the Blums like everyone, everywhere were suddenly required to "shelter in place" and adhere to additional safety guidelines

"We had a new norm overnight," says Executive Director Ashley Bulat. "Thankfully, with Erickson Living's guidance and resources, we were able to immediately put new processes in place that protected both residents and staff."

Mornings at Fox Run began with the entire staff having their temperature taken before pitching in to deliver meals, mail, groceries, packages, snacks, and newspapers to residents. The on-site medical clinic's physicians and staff also did their part by implementing telehealth appointments and even home visits when needed, sharing medical updates, processing lab work including COVID tests, and in the fall, providing a mobile flu clinic so residents could conveniently receive their flu vaccinations.

"Everyone's job changed," says Jon. "The entire staff, including management, did what they needed to do keep us safe, always with a wonderful attitude and smile on their face."

Connected community

Bulat says though safety was a major priority during the pandemic, staying connected was also important.

"We knew how emotionally difficult it was to suddenly be away from neighbors, family, and activities," says Bulat. "We wanted to create ways to keep everyone connected and engaged during this stressful time."

Fox Run's resident life team pitched in to create daily entertainment and interactive programming, all available on channel 952, the community in-house television station.

The daily lineup included virtual fitness classes; community updates hosted by the executive director along with Fox Run's resident life, sales and dining management team; and bingo, trivia, and Name That Tune-style competitions. Residents also tuned in for musical happy hours, educational programs, movies, spiritual services, and frequent "Coffee with Ashley" programs, featuring interactive discussions and community updates.

Community members even attended a virtual gala where they were treated to an in-home surf and turf dining experience along with a Frank Sinatra-style entertainer. Residents kept up with all the daily television offerings on the Fox Run Connection, the community's entertainment guide.

"The TV line up was great," says Jon. "We loved living here before the pandemic, but with the care and attention we've received this past year, we're more glad than ever."

Moving forward

Throughout a tough year, Fox Run neighbors have maintained exercise regimens, interacted with each other safely, kept abreast of community news, and easily connected with the medical team for questions, testing, or treatment. More than 94% of Fox Run residents have safely and easily received the COVID 19 vaccination in on-site clinics set up just for them.

"We literally didn't do anything," says Jon. "No computer questionnaires to fill out, confusion about how we'd get the shots, or driving somewhere to stand in line. Everything was arranged for us."

With safety guidelines always in place, Fox Run residents are enjoying in-person land and aquatics fitness classes; working out individually in the fitness center and all-season pool; creating projects in the wood shop; and dining in the community's spacious restaurants. Residents are also exploring the campus via its winding walking trails; exercising pets in the community's dog park; and shopping at the Treasure Chest, the community's onsite gift and resale shop.

"We're slowly and safely getting back to normal," says Bulat. "With about 120 resident-driven clubs and literally hundreds of activities we enjoyed before the pandemic, we can't wait."
