Fox Run's Medical Center Provides a Personalized Approach to Well-Being

When Geri Angel was preparing to move into her one-bedroom, one-bath residence at Fox Run, the Erickson Senior Living community in Novi, Mich., there was one thing she didn't want to change--her primary care provider.

Luckily, she didn't have to. Fox Run's on-campus medical center, staffed with full-time physicians who have experience in senior health care, is available for residents in any capacity from annual wellness checkups to flu shots.

"Snow, sleet, rain, wind, whatever, all I have to do is walk down the hallway to get to the doctor," she says.

Convenience matters

Geri appreciated being able to see her longtime primary care provider--until she woke up one morning with an eye that was blood red, just hours before leaving for a flight to Australia.

"I called my primary care provider's office, and they said I had to wait a week; they didn't have anything open," recalls Geri. "So, I called our medical center here and explained the situation. They got me in to see a doctor in a half hour. She examined me, wrote a prescription, and sent it to the pharmacy across the hall. I picked it up and headed for the airport!"

"You can't beat the convenience," says Medical Director Dr. Vrinda Suneja, who has worked at Fox Run for more than 20 years. "Whether you choose to visit the medical center for routine or timely visits, we are here to help."

She continues, "If you schedule a wellness visit at the medical center once a year, we have your updated medical history on hand, including any medications and allergies. In case of an emergency, this helps us come up with the best treatment plan based on your health history."

"If you wake up feeling bad," says Geri, "you can call in the morning, and 99.9% of the time, they can get you in the same day."

'Down-to-earth'

Staffed with two physicians, a nurse practitioner, and a podiatrist, it's easy for residents to receive compassionate, senior-focused care at the medical center. In addition to in-person visits, residents can schedule telehealth check-ins.

A little over a year ago, Geri's primary care provider told her she was retiring and suggested she begin seeing the physicians at Fox Run.

"She said, 'They're fabulous,'" recalls Geri. "And this came from a doctor in the Henry Ford Health system!"

Suneja and her team prioritize person-centered and goal-directed care. "When it comes to quality care, it's important for doctors to ask their patients, 'What matters to you? What's important to you?' rather than, 'What's the matter with you?'" notes Suneja. "We want to provide the best quality care to our residents."

"They are so down-to-earth and easy to talk to," confirms Geri. "The relationships they form with residents are unbelievable."

Time for you

And unlike the median primary care office visit in the United States (just 15.7 minutes), residents have ample time to discuss their questions and concerns. The medical center offers 60-minute new patient appointments, and all subsequent visits last 30 minutes.

"I get sufficient time with my patients. I never feel rushed," says Suneja. "I have plenty of opportunity to see where the patient is coming from and what is needed to keep them comfortable, independent, and active."

Geri, following a four-month program, looks forward to visiting her new primary care provider multiple times a year.

"When I was with my other primary care provider, I had a once-a-year physical, and I'd have to call six to eight weeks in advance," she recalls. "Here, my doctor sees me three times a year versus one time a year. In my opinion, she's more likely to catch something that's going on rather than waiting an entire year."

And, if Geri happens to forget to ask a question during her appointment, she can always reach out through the online patient portal.

"The patient portal is fabulous!" she says. "I can communicate with my doctor, ask for prescription refills, get test results, or even ask a health question."
