Eagle's Trace Volunteers Attend Reading Program with Former First Lady at Barbara Bush Elementary School

February 17, 2014

HOUSTON, TX---For four years, residents of Eagle's Trace retirement community in West Houston have taken on a labor of love: mentoring students at Barbara Bush Elementary School.
Working with first graders to reinforce math lessons and volunteering in other areas, their biweekly visits make these dedicated volunteers a part of the school's extended family.
Their intergenerational bond was demonstrated on February 4th as eleven residents of Eagle's Trace joined the students and faculty for a morning of reading with former First Lady and the school's namesake, Mrs. Barbara Bush.
Each year, Mrs. Bush visits the school to read books to two groups of students.
"We were very proud to be invited by the principal.  I think we were as excited as the kids, but then we are all kids at heart," stated Pat Osborne, a resident of Eagle's Trace and a member of the Community Outreach Committee that sponsors the program.  "You could really see how Mrs. Bush is proud of each student's achievement and the school's academic success."
Fellow resident Debby Cate agreed.  The former educator was impressed by the attention to detail that Mrs. Bush demonstrated to the children.
"Being able to attend the program that featured Mrs. Bush was a fantastic experience.  Her wit and warmth in answering the questions from the students was inspirational," recalled Mrs. Cate.
"This is my third year of tutoring at Barbara Bush Elementary School.  I enjoy being with the students as they are great kids and eager to learn," stated Mrs. Cate.  "It is very rewarding to share our time with them."
