Reap The Benefits of An Active, Social Lifestyle at Devonshire

June 29, 2022

Social activity is an essential component of healthy aging, according to the Memory and Aging Project study conducted by Rush University. The study defined social activity as spending time with friends or relatives, going to restaurants and sporting events, playing games, attending group meetings and religious services, taking trips, and participating in community or volunteer work.

At Devonshire, an Erickson Senior Living community at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., community members have all these activities at their fingertips.

"Devonshire community members gain a diverse range of options that enhance their overall well-being and quality of life," says Resident Services Manager William Bores. "Our monthly calendar is filled with activities and special events, including live music, special trips, and social gatherings, which are designed to help residents explore their interests - while enjoying the company of their neighbors."

Decision-making time

For Ray Lowe, a new community member at Devonshire, the journey to embracing an active lifestyle began last year.

"I knew I didn't want to live in my condo anymore," he says. "I began looking at retirement communities in the area. I saw an advertisement for Devonshire and decided to check it out by meeting with members of the sales team. They were all very nice, answering all my questions. I wanted to know if there were other people like me - active and involved. The team suggested I come to dinner on campus to see for myself. I agreed and immediately learned that this community is made up of very friendly, active, and engaged people."

Equipped with this knowledge, Ray sat down and made a list of all his options.

"It was clear that Devonshire was at the top of the list," he remarks. "It was important to make this decision, for both myself and my son. I didn't want to put that burden on him at some point in the future."

A hole in one

"I chose Devonshire because it met all my needs while keeping me close to my son and grandson," Ray explains. "And, as a golfer, the community's location at PGA National was an added benefit."

After moving to Devonshire from his condo in nearby Singer Island in December 2021, Ray immediately dove into community life, making friends and playing rounds of golf.

"I really like the fact that, as a Devonshire community member, I hold a membership at PGA National Resort and Spa," he says. "I love to play golf and do so three to five times a week. I really enjoy playing with a combination of different people. It's a great way to meet new faces."

Ray's love for the game was quickly apparent to his neighbors. He now serves as Devonshire's resident golf ambassador, meeting with - and offering to play with - new community members.

New opportunities blossom

In addition to frequently visiting the green, Ray finds that his maintenance-free lifestyle at Devonshire affords him the freedom to pursue a variety of activities with his new friends.

"It's very easy to meet my neighbors," he says. "I have a rule to never turn down an invitation, if I am available. I've accepted many invitations to dinner and met some really nice people."

"One thing that really surprised me is the high-quality music available to community members," he adds. "I've enjoyed some wonderful concerts. In fact, just the other day I was walking down the hall and heard a big band practicing for an upcoming concert. They were really very good."

And just a few months after his move, Ray decided to volunteer his time as a resident ambassador, sharing his experience with prospective Devonshire community members. At informational luncheons and other sales and marketing events, Ray shares his story and offers advice.

Spreading the word

"Some people are afraid of making a move," he says. "But there really is no reason to wait! I tell people that they should come when they are healthy and able to enjoy everything that is happening and available at Devonshire. If you can do it early, you should. The only regret I hear is from people who wish they moved sooner."

Because he moved less than five miles, it's easy for him to keep up with old friends.

"My friends were very curious about my new life here," he says. "So, I invited them to join me for dinner. The restaurants at Devonshire are very good - high-end. When my friends joined me here, they were pleasantly surprised, remarking that their meal was as good as anything in the local area."

And the surprises of an active, engaging community - all pleasant - keep coming, adds Ray.

"As a new community member, I look forward to many exciting adventures," he says. "In every way, Devonshire has completely exceeded my expectations."
