"Wellness is derived from our ability to understand, accept and act upon our capacity to lead a purpose-filled and engaged life," according to the International Council on Active Aging. "In doing so, we can embrace our potential ... to pursue and optimize life's possibilities."

At Devonshire, an Erickson Senior Living community at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, community members enjoy a wide range of resources designed to support their well-being, including membership privileges at PGA National Resort & Spa; an onsite, state-of-the-art fitness center; a swimming pool; healthy dining options; and many resident-run clubs. As a result, community members are well equipped to achieve and maintain a high level of wellness.

Premier Access to PGA National Resort for Devonshire Residents

One of the most significant benefits of moving to Devonshire is full membership at PGA National—which includes access to five championship 18-hole golf courses, tennis courts, a world-class destination spa, state-of-the-art sports and racquet club, and exclusive membership club.

Community members Elena Portoles and Jean Perkins love golfing at PGA National. “I play three times a week,” says Jean. “I like being able to do something active outdoors, and it’s a great way to socialize with neighbors.”

Adds Elena, “Because I love spending time outdoors, the ability to enjoy the resources at PGA National is an added bonus to my wonderful life at Devonshire.”

Staying Active in an Independent Living Community

Devonshire’s on-site fitness center is truly the heart of prioritizing wellness. Equipped with updated cardio and strength machines, there’s plenty of options for community members to design a physical fitness plan to meet their unique needs and goals.

“We develop wonderful relationships with our community members and want to see them live their best lives,” says Devonshire Fitness Specialist Remy Harwood. “It is our priority to help them maximize personal wellness and independence, achieve optimal physical and mental health, and age with dignity.”

Harwood works one-on-one with community members in the updated and fully-equipped fitness center, ensuring that workouts fit individuals’ physical needs and personal goals.

Community member Richard Kolodny speaks to how wonderful Remy is, no matter who she’s assisting or what she’s leading.

“Remy is extremely knowledgeable about fitness. She’s skilled at motivating and encouraging community members to exercise and be active,” Richard says. “She truly cares and is dedicated to improving our fitness and health. This is made clear by the amount of effort she puts into her work, in addition to her attitude and patience.”

Harwood notes that the outdoor pool is perfect for a variety of activities—cooling off, lap swimming, and even participating in the popular aquacise exercise class.

“Our community members enjoy many health benefits from aquacise,” says Harwood, who leads the class in the outdoor pool every Tuesday and Thursday morning. “It's a fairly popular activity here because it is not limited to any age group or fitness level. It increases flexibility, improves heart and lung function, builds strength, enhances coordination, and increases metabolism.”

To support the healthy habits community members establish in the fitness center, there are plenty of healthful food options to choose from at any of the five restaurants across campus. Menus rotate regularly and all meals are fresh, nutritious, and made-to-order—there’s something to satisfy every taste and meet each person’s dietary needs.

Wellness is Everywhere at Devonshire Independent Living

Devonshire community members also often utilize the community’s full-size croquet court and the Stratford Performing Arts Center, which hosts events that are designed to entertain a variety of interests.

“A big component of personal wellness is socialization—engaging with other community members,” says Resident Services Manager Marty Bores.

“When it comes to socializing, there is truly something for everyone,” says community member Shirley Alley. “There’s no excuse to be bored. In fact, there are not enough hours in the day to enjoy everything there is to do here.”

Looking forward to embracing the New Year, Devonshire community members are eager to advance their well-being. Given the multiple health and wellness resources on campus, community members have all they need to better their physical and mental health.

“My advice to everyone is this: Just because it’s a new year, and you may have made a resolution for yourself, doesn't mean you have to make a drastic change right away,” says Harwood. “Start with little steps. Think about what you like to do or what you would like to do, and then fit the new activity into your life. And if possible, try something new. At Devonshire, the sky’s the limit!”
