Filling Each Day with Joy at Devonshire

Although Mona Osterman and her late husband Howard lived just four miles from Devonshire, the Erickson Senior Living community at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., they hadn't put much thought to moving there.

Until they received an invitation to have lunch at the community from a former neighbor, that is. 

"A former neighbor and community member invited us for lunch and her enthusiasm led us to the marketing team," Mona says. "We took a tour and were impressed with everything we saw, taking the time to speak with community members."

She continues, "We asked them if they had any regrets about their move, and they all said the same thing: 'We should have moved sooner.' That comment stuck with us. That day, we started preparing for a move!"

Since moving to Devonshire in 2018, Mona--fondly known as the "Sunshine Lady" around campus--has made the most of her carefree lifestyle by giving back to the community, participating in activities, and utilizing the industry-leading amenities. 

Giving back

"When Howard and I moved in, a community member sent us a card," she says. "That little note meant so much to us. It was the added touch that made Devonshire feel like home."

Paying it forward, Mona has sent dozens of handwritten welcome cards to new neighbors and get-well cards to Chatsworth, a local assisted living and rehabilitation center serving Devonshire community members.

To further introduce newcomers to life at the bustling community, she joined the Welcome Home Committee. "Because I've lived here for many years, I felt especially qualified for the position. It enables me to share all the things I've learned."

Giving so much of her time to others, Mona quickly adopted the nickname of "Sunshine Lady." "I've been involved with volunteer work my whole life. It's what I love to do!" she says. 

Mona also works with Resident Event Coordinator Ashley Hobbs on the Activities Committee, planning events and trips for her neighbors. 

"I spent many years as a program director," she says. "I know what seniors enjoy. Our Resident Services team creates an array of opportunities that cater to a lot of interests."

Carefree living

Mona credits her maintenance-free apartment home and the monthly service package for all the free time she has to get involved around campus. 

The monthly service package covers the cost of utilities, including basic cable television; appliance repair and replacement; housekeeping; a meal plan at on-site restaurants, and more. 

"I recently had a lightbulb that needed to be replaced and a picture that needed to be hung," she notes. "So, I called General Services, and they took care of everything."

With these small tasks, repairs, and lawn care off her to-do list, Mona has packed her calendar with a variety of activities and trips--in addition to her volunteer efforts. 

"I enjoy the lectures, excursions, book club meetings, and our fabulous library," she says. "We also have live entertainment three nights a week in our lounge, a movie theater, and a fitness center with a trainer. Many community members are also involved in charities, raising money at several events throughout the year."

It is through these activities that Mona continues to meet new neighbors and make friends. 

"Devonshire has given me a life that is filled with friendships and wonderful experiences," she says. "Our five on-campus restaurants are great places to socialize as well."

A support network

These caring friends made a huge difference in Mona's life when Howard passed away in 2021. 

"I truly believe that moving to Devonshire was Howard's grand plan," she says. "Assuming he would pass first, he knew this was the perfect place for me. I am very social, love people, and enjoy volunteering."

This support continues to provide Mona--and her two daughters, Jill and Jamie--peace of mind. 

"Jill, Jamie, their husbands, my five grandchildren, and my two great-grandchildren are so pleased with Devonshire," she says. "They love visiting me!"

She adds, "Devonshire is a wonderful place to be. It's a community filled with numerous activities and very friendly neighbors. Everything makes for a life well-lived."
