When Ann Selinger helped her aunt move to Linden Ponds, an Erickson Senior Living community in Hingham, Mass., she was impressed by the on-campus medical center and its skilled staff members.
"Her doctor was wonderful," says Ann, who served as primary caretaker for her aunt. "I was living in Washington, D.C., and the doctor would call with updates. All along the way, we were partners in my aunt's care. I was so impressed."
So, it should come as no surprise that health care was at the top of Ann's checklist when she began researching her own senior living options.
Top priority
Because Erickson Senior Living provides high quality, senior-focused care at each of its communities, Ann knew she would have a similar positive experience at Brooksby Village, the Erickson community in Peabody, Mass.
"So, moving here was a given!" notes Ann, who moved from Dunstable, Mass., to be closer to her children.
Now, she can't say enough about the compassionate care she receives at Brooksby's medical center.
When Ann made the move to Brooksby, she was seeing physicians in the area.
But once she settled into her residence, she switched to Brooksby's on-campus medical center, under the care of a nurse practitioner who became her primary care provider.
"She was lovely. That started my positive experience with the medical center," says Ann, who has since started seeing Dr. Catherine Reizun, the community's medical director.
Dr. Reizun joined Brooksby's medical team in 2023 after completing her geriatric medicine fellowship through Harvard's Multicampus Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.
"When I heard about the opportunity at Brooksby, I was instantly intrigued by the care model," Reizun recalls. "Establishing a close relationship with a patient and their family members, just like Ann and her aunt had, is why I went into primary care in the first place. Erickson Senior Living communities are unique in this way."
The doctor is in
Staffed with two board-certified physicians, a nurse practitioner, and two licensed social workers, it's easy for residents to receive quality, senior-focused care at the medical center--just steps away from their front doors.
"As I like to say, health care is offered right in residents' backyards," notes Reizun.
Convenient options
In addition to annual in-person checkups, residents can schedule telehealth check-ins and home visits. Every initial appointment is an hour long, with subsequent visits lasting as long as 30 minutes.
"Having medical providers in the community to address any question or concern really puts residents and their families at ease," Reizun adds. "Our team offers better follow-up, resulting in better outcomes and greater quality of care for residents."
And with security--trained in emergency response--on call 24/7, residents know they will always have a quick response after medical center hours and on weekends.
"If it's the middle of the night, security responds and can quickly contact the on-call doctor. They are always wonderful," Ann says. "Kindness must be the first thing on the checklist when they're hired!"
Freedom to choose
Residents who keep their current primary care providers can still use the medical center for flu shots, tests, and screenings as needed.
"However, we encourage these residents to establish themselves at the medical center by visiting once a year to keep their records up to date," explains Reizun. "In case of an emergency, this helps us come up with the best treatment plan based on their health history."
Ann appreciates having the best of both worlds.
"I have all my specialists nearby, only four or five minutes away," Ann says. "Another reason I'm happy I'm here is I use the on-site transportation. When I'm finished at an appointment off campus, I call the shuttle service. When they arrive, they pick me up and drive me home."
Continuum of care
Should the health care needs of a resident change, other services are offered, including assisted care and skilled nursing.
All health care providers--from the medical center to the on-campus continuing care neighborhood--work together to provide residents the highest quality of care.
"Having support from the same provider you saw in independent living as you transition to assisted care or long-term care removes the unknown of, 'Who will care for me?'" Reizun says. "We are with you every step of the way."
