Peabody, MA -- Mickey Ratte remembers listening to the Red Sox games on the radio with her parents in her home in Peabody at just 12 years of age. For 65 years, Ratte has been a huge Red Sox Fan and continues to watch every game where she lives at Brooksby Village in Peabody. She has also been involved with planning Red Sox Pep Rally's and other sporting events at the Retirement Community.
"I loved watching Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr," said Ratte. "These were great men who were not about the publicity but about their team. They were so exciting to watch. I also loved Larry Doby, who played for Cleveland at the time, but I loved his stance."
Ratte remembers watching with her dad, who would at the end of every season say "wait till next year, never give up." Her dad past away in 2003 and they won the World Series the very next year in 2004.
"I have watched them for years and have gone through the ups and downs," said Ratte. "This year's team is very exciting and the beards have been a fun addition. Big Papi's Grand Slam the other night was unbelievable."
A baseball and sports fan for as long as she can remember, Ratte went to her principal back in 8th grade in Peabody and asked for permission to start a girls softball team. The boys all played sports after school but not the girls. He gave her permission and the girls were able to play.
Cliff Brown, who also lives at Brooksby Village, has also been a fan for years and has a number of Red Sox memorabilia including autographed baseballs, one from Carl Yastrzemski, and a piece of the Green Monster.
"My dad never saw them win a pennant or a world series so I am so thankful I have been able to see that happen," said Ratte. "This has been a very exciting few weeks and I have a feeling it will continue. If not, I will say what my dad always said "wait till next year!"
