Rob and Marge Labman Unlock Financial Freedom at Ann's Choice

Ann's Choice Residents

Although Rob and Marge Labman loved their house, they weren't a fan of the increasing upkeep.

"I was growing tired of all the work associated with maintaining a house. It always seemed to be one thing on top of another," says Rob. "Not to mention all the checks we had to write."

When the couple began exploring their senior living options, Ann's Choice, the Erickson Senior Living community in Bucks County, Pa., quickly rose to the top of their list--for many reasons.

"Having a maintenance-free apartment home meant that we wouldn't have to worry about fixing things ourselves," explains Marge. "There are also so many amenities! We could be as active and involved as we wanted."

Rob, a retired certified public accountant, especially appreciated the savings. "We compared what we were paying in our house with what we would be paying at Ann's Choice. To our surprise, living at Ann's Choice would be less expensive. It was an opportunity we couldn't pass up!"

Predictable costs

The community's pricing structure is made up of two attractive components: a 90% refundable entrance deposit* and a monthly service package.

The 90% refundable entrance deposit, which is used to secure your desired apartment home, goes back to you or your beneficiaries, if or when you leave the community.

"From a financial standpoint, one thing I was especially impressed with was the 90% refundable entrance deposit. It provides tremendous peace of mind," notes Rob. "For me, it was the clincher in making the decision to move to Ann's Choice."

The monthly service package covers all utilities except phone and internet; a dining plan at on-site restaurants; maintenance, including appliance repair and replacement; access to amenities; regularly scheduled transportation; and more.

"During our cost comparison, we looked at things that others might not even consider. Because meals are included in the monthly service package, we asked ourselves, 'How much would we save by not having to purchase groceries and prepare 30 dinners each month?'" he adds.

Worry-free living

Having maintenance bundled into the monthly service package was another huge advantage for Rob and Marge.

"It's easy to manage our budget, which wasn't always the case in our old house," says Marge. "Unexpected expenses could really throw a wrench in things."

"Contrary to what many people think, it's not free to live in a house once the mortgage is paid off," explains Finance Director Tom Walsh. "Maintenance, repairs, and upkeep can often be costly and unpredictable, yet they're crucial in protecting the value of your property. Taxes and insurance also add up."

Now, the Labmans no longer need to worry about lawn care and can simply call General Services when a lightbulb burns out or a faucet drips.

Socialization matters

A January 2024 article in U.S. News and World Report cited not only the major financial benefits of moving to a continuing care retirement community, but the intangible advantages of experiencing a sense of community and having an array of convenient amenities.

Just outside Rob and Marge's front door is a fitness center, hair salon and barber shop, performing arts center, putting green, library, and dozens of clubs and activities to participate in.

"We wouldn't have such a vast network of social connections if we were still living in a single-family house," says Rob.

Since settling into their apartment home last year, Rob has joined many poker games with newfound friends, and Marge has tried tai chi, making pottery, and aquatic exercise classes.

"I'm also a Resident Ambassador," says Marge. "I love meeting with prospective residents and sharing the joys of living at Ann's Choice."

Walsh notes that these amenities and activities continue to evolve over time to meet the needs of current and future residents.

"Our dedication to continuously investing in our buildings ensures that our community remains vibrant and up-to-date," he explains. "This forward-thinking approach not only enhances the quality of life for our residents, but also preserves the value of their investment in Ann's Choice."

Unbeatable value

Looking back on their first year at Ann's Choice, Rob and Marge are glad they made the move.

"Living at Ann's Choice is more affordable than we thought, and we've gained so many benefits--more than we ever anticipated," says Rob. "Rather than spending time stressing over maintenance and repairs, we're free to focus on what we're interested in. That's value you can't beat!"
