When choosing among 55-plus communities, assisted living, and continuing care retirement communities, you have a lot of factors to consider. But take a closer look, and you'll see a world of difference in the experiences they offer.
Ask any Erickson Senior Living resident what sets their community apart, and they'll tell you it's the people.
"We know that we can go directly to management about any of our concerns. That openness and receptivity is important to feeling heard," says Don Simon, a resident at Ann's Choice, an Erickson Senior Living community in Bucks County, Pa.
From the knowledgeable sales associate who helps you find the perfect apartment home to the fitness trainer who motivates you to reach your goals to the enthusiastic servers at your favorite on-campus restaurant, it's the staff members who make Ann's Choice such a great place to live.
Resident representative
As finance chair of the Resident Advisory Council (RAC), Don is invested in the well-being of his neighbors.
"The council communicates and acts on behalf of all the residents at Ann's Choice," explains Don. "We work hand in hand with staff, expressing concerns and providing suggestions to make things better. It's this symbiosis that makes our community stronger."
With a Ph.D. in economics, Don spent over 40 years working at a prestigious research institute where he directed a staff of researchers, wrote reports, and edited reports written by colleagues.
"His background made him a perfect fit," says Tom Walsh, director of finance at Ann's Choice, "and he's doing great."
Together, Walsh and Don work diligently to provide the most up-to-date information regarding the community's budgeting and costs that residents incur. First, Don meets with the financial committee quarterly to go over finances. Then, he brings these numbers and any concerns discussed to each RAC meeting, where Walsh sits in.
"In my role as finance chair, I interact with Tom Walsh all the time," notes Don. "I can ask him questions that people propose about different financial topics, and he's always happy to answer to the best of his ability. It's unusual - but so appreciated - to have this high level of counsel."
Tight-knit relationships
Jeannette Collins, human resources director at Ann's Choice, explains that tight-knit relationships - just like the one Don and Walsh share - can be found at any Erickson Senior Living community.
"There's such a warm environment here, thanks to the collaboration between staff and community members," Collins says. "Our staff members work hard to ensure that residents feel at home, and it makes a big difference. It's what makes Ann's Choice shine!"
She adds, "I don't think that our competitors can say the same. Several high school students started as dishwashers, and now they've moved into general manager positions in dining. Residents get to witness those students mature, which is really special."
The community's Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DI&B) Committee is another wonderful example of how everyone works together to support a greater cause.
"This year, the DI&B Committee held its second annual Pride Fest," says Collins. "It's put on by both residents and employees. It's really nice to see everyone unite and work together so seamlessly."
Career growth
For Collins, who has been with Erickson Senior Living for 17 years, the opportunities for professional and personal growth also contribute to her job satisfaction.
"When I was job hunting, nearly two decades ago now, I was seeking a company that would invest in its people and work toward growing and developing them here," she says. "I can confidently say that this has happened to me and to many of my coworkers."
Alan Butler, CEO of Erickson Senior Living, is happy to see one of the company's pillars in action.
"Senior living should be considered a destination for career-driven people who possess a passion for serving others," says Butler. "We continue to innovate and train our workforce because the services we offer to residents are only as good as the people who provide them. I am confident that we have the best in the business working for Erickson."
The intergenerational bonds between residents and staff are just one of many reasons why Ann's Choice continues to grow in popularity - both as a home and as an employer.
