Windsor Run Aquatics Center Is Popular All-Season Fitness Amenity

February 18, 2020

Matthews, North Carolina--National studies show that water activities are a tremendous form of exercise for older Americans.  The benefits range from physical to psychological.

At Windsor Run, an Erickson Living community in Matthews, North Carolina, the all-season aquatics center is becoming one of the more popular locales on campus.

Residents such as Bruce Bowen are taking advantage of the indoor pool as part of their health and wellbeing regimen.

"I played baseball and ran track in high school so I've always stayed active," described Mr. Bowen, a retired IBM employee who moved to Windsor Run with his wife Doris from nearby East Charlotte.  "Swimming laps now is one of my favorite forms of exercise."

Timothy Dean serves as the Fitness Coordinator at Windsor Run.  He has been in the wellness industry for more than seven years, holding a B.S. in Sports Management and his trainer certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).  He is also certified in CPR, First Aid and AED.

"At the pool, residents can enjoy a relaxing swim or take group classes to socialize in soothing salter water that is heated to a comfortable 86 degrees," said Mr. Dean.  "Because the pool and spa are indoors, residents have year-round access to their favorite water-related activities without worrying about inclement weather."

The pool ranges in depth from four to four and a half feet and features two lap lanes.  There is a 40-foot ramp that allows for ease of access.

"The convenience factor is amazing, too.  The pool is connected to the fitness center so all the resources for a full workout are in one central location," stated Mr. Dean.

He agrees with the reports that water exercise supports overall health.

"Take our water aerobics class, for example.  Residents can work on their cardio, endurance and balance in one session.  The water takes the weight off the joints so the class is safe and provides confidence.  And let's not forget the socialization aspect.  Residents are having fun with their friends," noted Mr. Dean.

Mr. Bowen is a believer.  "After swimming, I feel great.  The exercise raises my energy level, which helps me to be involved in so many other activities at Windsor Run like the bluegrass band and variety show," he said.
