OVERLAND PARK, KS (March 3, 2014) – Tallgrass Creek retirement community residents Linda and Jack Brookshire celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary February 19 with a special dinner prepared in their honor by the Dining Services staff.
The dinner consisted of Mixed Spring Salad greens with blue cheese dressing, clam chowder, beef tenderloin with grilled shrimp, fresh garlic mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli with fresh carrots, fresh baked dinner roll with butter, chocolate cake, wine, water, and coffee. Linda and Jack were joined by their son Jeff, who came from Texas to be with them.
Linda and Jack's love for one another is ageless. And the story of their first date is as endearing today as it was many decades ago:
Linda, who is a native of Maine, was in the state on vacation to see her parents for Easter when she went to an Officer's Club with a friend who was dating someone in the club. She met Jack, who was in the U.S. Air Force, that night at the club.
The next night, Jack didn't have a car because he was on the local base for a short period of time, but he got a ride from a friend and drove to be with Linda. Jack met her parents and wanted to take Linda to another small town nearby to visit another Officers' Club.
They began to date and eventually married.
Jack, a native of Kansas, served in the Air Force as a pilot from 1950-1958. He is a graduate of Baker University and a former TWA pilot.
Linda is a graduate of Colby College and a former advertising professional for Kenyon & Eckhardt in New York City.
Jack and Linda are avid golfers. Both have at least one hole-in-one, with Jack having three.
They moved to Tallgrass Creek from their former home in Overland Park.
Their daughter Jen lives in California.
