Tallgrass Creek Announces Plans for Health Care Expansion

December 12, 2012

OVERLAND PARK, KS (December 12, 2012) - Tallgrass Creek retirement community today announced Spring 2013 construction of a continuing care building at its 65-acre Overland Park, KS,  campus. The higher level of care programs that will be added at Tallgrass Creek will include 28 Assisted Living apartments, 28 Memory Care apartments and 44 Skilled Nursing rooms.  This adds up to 100 apartments; however, four apartments in assisted living will accommodate double occupancy, which brings the total number of beds (for licensing purposes) to 104.

  • Assisted Living is designed for people who need assistance with activities of daily living.  In general this includes dressing, bathing, reminders to take medication, and more.  Additionally, a resident diagnosed with mild to moderate memory impairment may do very well in this environment.
  • Memory Care is a specialty area that cares for the specific and unique needs of those with significant memory impairment that include Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.  This environment is safe and secure and offers programming specific for residents having these diagnoses.
  • Skilled Nursing is an area that includes those that have temporary short-term needs that may include recovery or rehabilitation after a hospital procedure, as well as those with permanent long-term care needs requiring more intensive nursing services.

The City of Overland Park has approved the preliminary plans.  A building permit has been issued to Erickson Living, the manager and developer of Tallgrass Creek. Request for construction bids will be given to several construction companies, and will be awarded, after careful review, in early 2013.
The architect firm, Lantz-Boggio of Englewood, Colorado has been selected for the project.  Lantz-Boggio is uniquely qualified as it specializes in health care design.   It is familiar with Overland Park having recently completed the Heritage project not far from Tallgrass.  Lantz-Boggio is also working on several other Erickson Living projects at other campuses.
In order to serve residents as soon as possible construction will be in two phases.  The first phase will include a common area building that will be the center of the continuing care building.  This will be similar in nature the campus' current Audubon Clubhouse and will have reception and offices.  The first phase will also include a commercial kitchen that will serve all higher levels of care.  The Assisted Living area will be included in this first phase of construction and is expected to be ready for operation in December, 2013.  The second phase of building will include the addition of long-term care and skilled nursing, as well as a memory care.  This final phase of building is expected to be completed approximately 90 days after assisted living opens.
The continuing care building will be given a unique name that will identify it and will be announced in early 2013, and will be located north of the clubhouse.  Although the new building will not be attached to the Audubon Clubhouse, a covered walkway is planned that will allow visitors to walk between buildings.
