Riderwood Announces Interactive Education Series on Dementia for Family Caregivers

SILVER SPRING, MD---Riderwood, the Erickson Living retirement community, will be hosting a three-part series in the fall designed to educate families that have loved ones with dementia.
This interactive discussion series will focus on sharing the latest information as well as best strategies for care. 
Jennifer Fitzpatrick of Jenerations Health Education Inc. will be the keynote speaker for the series.  A licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience with older adults, Ms. Fitzpatrick is a nationally-recognized speaker on issues involving dementia.
According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than 15.4 million family and friends provided 17.5 billion hours of care to those with Alzheimer's and other dementia-related illness.
The events are free and open to the public.  The dates, times and topics are as follows:
• Wednesday, September 11th from 6:00pm-7:30 p.m.
"The Talk": Persuasive Strategies for Discussing Options with a Newly Diagnosed Dementia Patient
This program will focus on how and when to broach treatment options, housing and other care issues with a loved one newly diagnosed with dementia.
• Wednesday, October 9th from 6:00pm-7:30 p.m.
Mom Needs Assisted Living, Now What? -- Exploring Options For Seniors On The Long Term Care Continuum
This program will focus on how to choose a community that is the best fit for an older adult based on individual preferences & medical needs.
• Wednesday, November 13th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Dementia Caregiving 101: What to Expect & How to Make it Easier
Permanent dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, is progressive and terminal.  Most family caregivers have no idea what to expect when a loved one is diagnosed.  This program will give practical tips and a timeline so families can best prepare legally, medically and psychologically.
