Are You an Exceptional Ager? May 23rd Event Might Answer the Question

May 16, 2013

SILVER SPRING, MD---Riderwood, the Erickson Living retirement community, will host Dr. Luigi Ferrucci, M.D., Ph.D., Scientific Director of the National Institute on Aging, on Thursday, May 23rd.
An internationally known geriatrician/gerontologist, Dr. Ferrucci will be discussing the launch of the Insight into Determinants of Exceptional Aging and Longevity (IDEAL) study.
IDEAL is a special project within the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA).  For over fifty years, BLSA researchers have studied changes that take place in the human body over time in an attempt to better understand the aging process.
Sponsored by the Social Work Department for Active Aging Month, the event will take place at 1pm in the Encore Theater, located in the Lakewood Commons clubhouse of Riderwood.  The Erickson Living community is located at 3140 Gracefield Road in Silver Spring.
IDEAL focuses on a small but growing segment of the aging population known as "exceptional" agers.  Exceptional agers are 80 years or older, healthy and have no physical or cognitive limitations.  Understanding what differentiates exceptional agers from others their age may provide important clues on how to preserve physical and cognitive function in late life and prevent disease and disability.
