Students from Maryvale partner with residents for annual outdoor garden project
PARKVILLE, MD---The record-setting warm temperatures in Baltimore have given everyone a head start on outdoor fun. And fully taking advantage of the weather are the residents of Oak Crest retirement community, where the cherry trees are in bloom.
On March 23rd, sixteen students from Maryvale Preparatory School in Baltimore joined residents for the annual spring garden clean-up on a sun-splashed, 80-degree day.
The activity was a volunteer service project for the high school.
Residents with a green thumb have access to a garden area to grow their own plants and vegetables. There are 76 plots in total, and the resident-led Garden Club and the Oak Crest General Services Department work together to manage the area.
In teams, the students assisted with pulling weeds, raking leaves, spreading compost and mulch and planting perennials in each area.
Tricia Giuffrida, health and physical education teacher at Maryvale, joined in the fun.
"The spring garden project at Oak Crest is a popular community service activity at Maryvale," described Ms. Giuffrida. "It's a great opportunity for the students to socialize with the residents and enjoy an absolutely beautiful day of gardening."
2012 marks the fifth year that an area high school has volunteered at Oak Crest for the clean-up.
Ann Crane is an Oak Crest resident who is a member and leader of the Garden Club. For her, the annual spring clean-up is more than just tilling and mulching the grounds.
"The Garden Club really enjoys the interaction with the students. They are terrific. Being with them allows our members to share their experience as gardeners, along with some 'secret' green thumb tips, with a new generation," described Ms. Crane.
