"Once a Marine, Always a Marine:" Oak Crest to partner with Marine Corps League for 236th Anniversary Celebration of U.S. Marine Corps

November 7, 2011

Oldest and youngest Marines to be recognized...from Iwo Jima to the Persian Gulf

PARKVILLE, MD---On November 10, 1775, Captain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of Continental Marines in Philadelphia as Naval Infantry.  From then until today, the United States Marine Corps has bravely defended our nation.
To celebrate the 236th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps, retired and former Marines who are residents and staff of Oak Crest retirement community will gather together with the Marine Corps League on November 8th, 2011 at the Acorn Pub.
Many will be wearing their "Dress Blues."  Following opening remarks and the playing of the Marine Corps Hymn, attendees will cut a birthday cake with a ceremonial sword.  The cake will first be shared by the youngest Marine in attendance and the oldest Marine in attendance, Iwo Jima veteran Joe Wetchy.
As a precursor to Veterans Day, many stories will be shared by the Marines in attendance as well as interesting photo ops.
