For access to an Employee Health and Wellness Center & Fitness Center to financial incentives, Oak Crest recognized for industry leadership
PARKVILLE, MD---Oak Crest, the Erickson Living retirement community, won third place in the 2012 Healthiest Employer Awards sponsored by the Baltimore Business Journal. The presentation was made at a luncheon held on June 21st at Martin's Valley Mansion in Hunt Valley.
Oak Crest was recognized in the category of 500-1,499 employees. Twenty finalists in four categories were honored at the luncheon.
Wayne Countryman, editor of the Baltimore Business Journal, states that "these businesses, with staffs of dozens to thousands, report increased productivity, decreased absenteeism, and drops in workers' compensation payments since they adopted wellness programs."
Wendy Kelly agrees. She is Director of Human Resources at Oak Crest and notes that the culture of health and wellness programs has extended to residents and employees alike. "Caring for our residents is our highest priority. As a team, we asked ourselves how we could best ensure that our employees are physically, mentally and spiritually prepared to do their jobs every day."

Here are highlights of the health and wellness package at Oak Crest:
In September, 2009, the Employee Health and Wellness Center at Oak Crest opened its doors. Since then, there have been 5,061 plus employee visits taking advantage of urgent/sick care, Health IQ testing, well visits, work injury related care, referrals to specialty care and off site imaging, on-site physical therapy and confidential access to mental health care providers. The Center provides access to a personal health coach, who helps employees develop a plan and manage chronic health conditions.
Oak Crest houses an on-site pharmacy where employee prescriptions are filled conveniently during work hours.
Well Visits are 45-minute complete health exams tailored for women and men to choose from the following services: colon cancer screening, heart disease risk assessment and a complete history and physical exam. The Women's Well Visit includes osteoporosis screening, mammogram referral, while the Men's Well Visit includes screening for prostate disease.
A Health IQ is a 15-minute preventative screening including a cholesterol profile, diabetes screening, blood pressure check, weight and body mass index and vision screening. Based on these results, recommendations can be made regarding diet and exercise.
The Center promotes health and wellness in a unique way through fun events and challenges. Every month, a health concern is highlighted, resulting in employee recognition or give-aways.
Employees at Oak Crest have access to a Fitness Center to utilize cardio and strength training machines and take yoga and kettle bell classes. A talented team of trainers share their expertise and supervision.
Oak Crest provides spiritual support to its employees through on-site pastoral services; employees can meditate by walking the labyrinth or visiting the chapel.
Employees enrolled in an Erickson Living medical plan are eligible for a $240 reimbursement under the Wellness Fund for gym memberships, home exercise equipment, smoking cessation products and Weight Watchers/Jenny Craig.
Finally, Oak Crest offers a $260 Health Reward for employees, enrolled in its medical plan, who are non-smokers and take the Health IQ.
